Artist Biography: William Sadler was born about 1782 and practiced in Dublin as a painter, producing mainly views of neighborhoods of the city and its environs. He was known to have produced many copies of the old masters and was fond of painting dramatic scenes, ones of conflagrations being quite numerous.
Known particularly for his competent, atmospheric and topographically interesting views of the countryside around Dublin, Sadler remains an enigma in the history of 19th century Irish art. This is partially because his father, William (fl.1768-1788) and his own son, also William (b.1808) painted somewhat similar scenes in a vaguely similar style and can be confused. William Sadler II, however, stands out as being a better painter than either his father or his son. He is also credited as having taught painting and counted James Arthur O'Connor as one of his pupils.
In his 1913 Dictionary of Irish Artists, Walter Strickland notes however that he finally settled in Manders Building in Ranelagh where he died in December 1839. Sadler was greatly influenced by and did many copies of the Old Masters, particularly Dutch painters and this influence is seen in his landscape compositions with small figural groups. He also incorporated their technique of painting bright highlights to accentuate the almost three dimensional effect of his figures.
He was a regular contributor to exhibitions in the city between 1809 and 1821. He later exhibited at the newly formed Royal Hibernian Academy.
He produced works that depicted key events in the city of Dublin such as the fire at the Royal Arcade in 1837 as well as imagined views of places further afield such as Vesuvius Erupting.

- Twilight Landscape with Windmill and Church, 1891Located in Stockholm, SE"Twilight Landscape with Windmill and Church" is a captivating work by Swedish artist Albert Larsson, painted in 1891 when Larsson was 22 years old. The painting captures a landscape steeped in the quietude of dusk, with a sky ablaze in hues of red and orange, signalling the end of the day. The silhouettes of trees are rendered with astonishing detail against the twilight sky, showcasing Larsson's early mastery of light and shadow. Dominating the pastoral scene is a traditional windmill, its blades stilled against the sky, alongside the spire of a church that pierces the horizon. These structures, together with the meticulously painted trees, are testaments to the human presence within the natural world, suggesting a harmony between the two. A notable feature is the small water-filled furrow in the field, which catches the fading light of the sky, creating a pathway of reflection leading the eye through the composition. This detail highlights Larsson's skill in using light to draw attention to elements within his paintings. Albert Larsson, born on November 4, 1869, in Malmö and passing on August 31, 1952, in Lund, was an artist deeply influenced by his education in Copenhagen at the Art Academy and later at Peder Severin Krøyer...Category

- French Mid 19th Century Portrait of an Italian BrigandLocated in Cotignac, FRMid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame. The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays. There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo). Bands of brigands who populated the hills of southern Italy were steady fodder for the Romantic imagination, and their exploits were reported both factually, fancifully and artistically The painting dates from a period when France, under its then leader Napoleon III, was involved in the conflicts in the Italian states and the unification and eventual creation of the nation of Italy. An earlier and similar portrait exists of the infamous brigand Mazzocchi by Achille-Etna Michallony . Léon Cogniet...Category
