Willy Eisenschitz zählt zu den wichtigsten österreichischen Künstlern des 20. Jahrhunderts, der lange Zeit in seiner Heimat viel zu wenig Beachtung fand. In seiner Wahlheimat Frankreich erlangte er bereits zu Lebzeiten künstlerische Anerkennung, die in Österreich erst in den letzten 15 Jahren nach und nach anstieg.
Das Studium der Malerei führte Eisenschitz sehr früh nach Paris, die Liebe zu seiner Studienkollegin Claire Bertrand veranlasste ihn dazu in Frankreich zu bleiben. Eine Reise in die Provence wurde 1921 zum Schlüsselerlebnis für Willy Eisenschitz, die Atmosphäre und der Charme dieser Landschaft wurden von ihm in vielen seiner Arbeiten eingefangen. In Frankreich erlebte er in den 1930er Jahren seinen künstlerischen Höhepunkt, seine Werke wurden im Museum von Toulon und in der Galerie Durand-Ruel ausgestellt. Bereits sehr früh erhielt er die Goldmedaille auf der Weltausstellung in Paris und seine Bilder gelangten in bedeutende Sammlungen und Museen.
In der rechten unteren Ecke des Gemäldes befindet sich die Signatur des Künstlers.
