Willy Suter, born July 3, 1918 in Basel and died March 19, 2002 in Geneva, is a Swiss painter. From 1939 to 1941 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich with Ernst Gubler. In 1942 he was a pupil of Alexandre Blanchet at the School of Fine Arts in Geneva. As a young artist, he became a member of the Kunstlergruppe of Winterthur, of the society of painters, sculptors section of Geneva in 1946 and of the group of Saint Corps of Geneva in 1948. His first friends were the painters Rollier and Alberto Giacometti. During the 1970s, and again in the late 1980s, Suter increasingly turned to abstract painting. One of the characteristics of all of his work is the almost total renunciation of an illusionistic depth of space, in other words the deliberate perception of the image as a surface.
