A fine New England coastal landscape of Pigeon Hill in Rockport, MA by American artist Winthrop Duthie Turney (1884-1965). Turney was born in New York City and studied at the Art Students League under the guidance of George de Forest Brush, Frank V. DuMond and Louis Loeb. He was a member of the Fifteen Gallery Group, Allied Artists of America, and the Brooklyn Society of Modern Artists. Turney exhibited widely, including the Allied Artists of America, the Newark Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Museum of Modern Art. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, titled on verso; Vose Galleries (Boston) label “Pigeon Hill,” a 1951 Allied Artist of America Exhibition label (National Academy of Design) on verso, and housed in a foliate decorated giltwood frame. Dimensions: 20 in H x 24 in W; actual; 27.25˝ x 31.25 in W, framed.
