Lee Tiller
Silence of Summer Serenity, original painting, contemporary, landscape

2024

About the Item

This evocative painting by Lee Tiller is an invitation to pause, breathe and contemplate the beauty of nature. This roseate dusk captures the atmospheric effects of a gentle warm summers evening where the air is laden with fine gossamer mist. The rose-pink sky that dominates the painting is complemented with accents of dusky blues, purples, greens and golds. It is a painting that positively drips with atmosphere and light. Lee Tiller’s artistic style is firmly grounded in the tradition of the original French Impressionists and in this painting, the composition leans towards a more contemporary approach. Hidden with the brushstrokes are myriad colours that when discovered, often surprise and confound and viewed as a whole form a harmonious effect like that of lush musical composition. This landscape feels somewhat dreamlike with an ethereal quality, yet one that remains aesthetically real and familiar to us all, perhaps borne of a long-forgotten memory. A gentle place we’ve never visited, yet somehow, somewhere, it’s a place we have all been. Tillers paintings embody the essence of authentic impressionism and evoke deep emotions and atmosphere. His landscapes often appear as if illuminated from within by the effects of harnessed sunlight. And like the original French impressionists, Lee is fascinated with light and its influence on life and the landscape, and in this case its subtle diffusion through the airborne moisture that creates an enveloping silvery mist. You can image hearing the sound of a distant Song Thrush as it heralds the close of a beautiful summer’s day. ‘Silence of summer serenity’ will make a beautiful centre piece for any interior and will surely be the subject of many conversations. His studio, “the yellow house” which is adjacent to his home is an old converted bothy (small traditional barn) that overlooks a glacial valley known locally as ‘The Pocket’. Lee says… “I draw immense inspiration from the West Coast of Ireland. Its untamed beauty provides endless contrasts to our otherwise orderly state of human existence. The natural majesty of the mountains with their dramatic terrain often leave an unsettled air of intimidation, but can conversely serenade you with a calming gentleness too. It is a magical place indeed.” “I have long been inspired by the 19th Century impressionist painters who explored colour in a way that was hitherto unseen. The immediacy of impressionism provides the viewer with their own intimate experience of place and time, and is very much a case of show, but don’t tell. I love that people can interpret my paintings in a personal capacity. “ On more than one occasion Lee’s work has been likened to Monet and Van Gogh, and it’s easy to see where his major influences lie. Lee’s paintings are collected worldwide and can be found in private collections throughout both hemispheres. Painting in oils, his artistic works cover a diverse range of natural history subjects from marine wildlife through to wild chromatic impressionist landscapes.
