Dans cet espace saturé de matières et de couleurs, on distingue, au centre, un bouquet de roses. Apportant leurs taches claires et délicates dans le tumulte ambiant, ces six roses bien écloses sont autant de percées de lumière. Le vase qui les accueille, globe bleu au reflet blanc unique, repose bien centré sur une table orangée qui avance jusqu’au spectateur. Emanant de la gauche, une forme blanche s’allonge et gagne le vase ; elle représente vraisemblablement quelque nappe étirée de façon désordonnée. Eût-elle été noire que cette forme aurait immédiatement évoqué l’ombre du bouquet. Le fond, quant à lui, semble plus abstrait. Dans un amalgame de couleurs plus froides, le même bleu sombre que celui du vase – une fenêtre ? – transparait derrière les fleurs. Coloriste à la touche virevoltante, Utrillo, nous livre ici une subtile palette de couleurs qu’il superpose plus qu’il ne les mélange, par couches irrégulières pour jouer de leurs transparences. Plus intéressé par le traitement de la matière que par le sujet lui-même, il réalise ici une toile proche de l’abstraction.
