This abstract work is an explosion of colourful blocks, intended to symbolise the geometry and straight lines of sailing boats. The work is highly emblematic of the abstract expressionist experimentation with art forms in the 1960s, a pioneering time for artists in the United Kingdom.
Neil Murison
Murison was both in Bath in 1930 and attended the West of England College of Art. After teaching at Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital and the Bristol Blue Coat School, he became a lecturer at the West of England College of Art.
Since 1963, Murison held regular exhibitions in Bristol, Oxford, London, Germany and France, eventually amounting to over 40 solo shows. His works are in the collections of the Bank of America, the Portuguese Government, Bath University, the Skopje Museum of Modern Art, and Oxford University amongst others. His works were influenced by nature and the sights that he encountered during his travels around the world.
Murison became a full member of the Royal West of England Academy of Art in 1979, and was appointed as the Director of the New Gallery between 2003 and 2009. He is best known for his presidency of the Clevedon Art Club, a position which he held for three decades. Neil Murison passed away in 2018.
