About the Item
Alfred Aaron Wolmark R.A. 1877-1961, was a portrait and decorative genre subject painter. Born in Warsaw and travelled to England in 1894 where he remained. He was a painter of impressionist style works and painted in the manner of the Fauves colors being influenced whilst visiting France he also painted with a thick impasto which resulted in his works being exhibited alongside that of Van Gogh, much to his enjoyment, he painted in rich colors including historical Biblical subjects. This portrait is painted with an impressionist influence and with heavy impasto. The frame is typical of the period of early 20th century, Bloomsbury manner, hand decorated, the frame is shown here before undergoing a small amount of conservation which was very successful.

Alfred Aaron Wolmark
Alfred Aaron Wolmark was a painter and decorative artist. He was a pioneer of the New Movement in Art. Wolmark was born into a Jewish family in Warsaw. He emigrated to London, and became a British citizen in 1894. Returning briefly to Poland in 1903, Wolmark painted works based on Jewish historical subjects. In 1911, under the influence of modern French painting, he executed a series of studies of Breton fisherfolk and harbor life, 1911. Wolmark worked in the areas of interior decoration, the theater and stained glass, 1911–15. He made a stained glass window for St. Mary's Church in Slough in 1915. Wolmark painted a series of cityscapes in New York City, 1919–20. He held many exhibitions in London, New York and Paris, including portrait drawings at the Lefèvre Galleries, 1928. A retrospective of his work was held at Ferens Art Gallery, Kingston upon Hull in 1975. Wolmark’s paintings are now in many galleries around the world, including the National Portrait Gallery, London, Sheffield and Derby Museum and Art Gallery. Wolmark was one of the prime movers in setting up the Ben Uri Art Society, 1915.

James Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year.
From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts. Phillip received a BFA degree in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Missouri in 1972. Studied two years under painting department chairman, Wilbur Niewald. While attending school in Kansas City he became intrigued with the impressionist school of painting and their use of nature as a source of information for their work. Using the infinite variations of nature in the still life, figure and landscape, the artist is presented with limitless subject matter. Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and other painters of nature were earlier influences on Phillip's work. Dealing with ever-changing elements of nature, movement of light and shadow in the landscape, field workers finishing their tasks, Phillip adopted a broken color style of applying paint to his canvas. This approach allowed the image on the canvas to be developed quickly, and all at one time.
Phillip has lived and painted in the Northwest since 1989. His long desire to paint the subject matter of the impressionists painters and his belief that beautiful subject matter increases the probability of painting beautiful paintings, inspired two painting trips to Mexico and ten trips to Europe. In April of 2007, April of 2008 and again in 2014, a rented boat on the Canal du Midi, France served as a form of transportation, a floating studio and hotel.
