About the Item
Andrej Franševič Belloli (1821-1881)
Bather after bathing, 1870
Oil on canvas 165 x 100 cm
Frame, 200 x 135 cm
Signed in Cyrillic and dated in the lower right corner
The work examined here belongs to the production of Russian painter Andrei Frantsevich Belloli, who was born in the Papal States and worked first in Italy and later in Russia. He studied art at the Academy of St. Luke and left Italy, deciding to settle in St. Petersburg in 1859, where he worked as a decorative painter for churches, theaters and palaces; some frescoes are still extant today: such as the ceiling of the imperial box of the Mariinsky Theater or the one in the church of the Carskoe Selo Palace. He would later distinguish himself in the Russian art scene by going so far as to present his works annually at the St. Petersburg Art Academy, of which he became a member in 1863 while in 1870 he was even awarded the Order of Stanislaus for his important artistic activity, by Tsar Alexander II. He specialized mainly in portraits, primarily those of women and children often belonging to the Petersburg court or nobility, but his fame with the art scene was mainly attested through female nudes, of which our work is a shining example. In fact, this composition is a well-known work that Belloli painted in 1875 and is now in the Odessa Museum of Art; in particular, our canvas is dated 1870, as well as signed in Cyrillic in the lower right-hand corner, thus demonstrating the chronological antecedence of the latter, from which Belloli drew the primal idea of the subject later reproduced in the canvas preserved today in Odessa. The theme of the bather was also taken up in other versions by the artist, such as in that Museum of the Arts of Uzbekistan work that takes up the same subject as the canvas purchased by Nikolai Kostantinovič Romanov, nephew of Tsar Nicholas I confined to the Uzbek city because of the theft of three diamonds from a precious icon of the imperial family, stolen during his scandalous affair with the notorious American woman Henrietta "Harriet" Ely Blackford; during the exile imposed on him by his uncle, Tsar Alexander II, in Tashkent, he had his palace built to house and display his vast and extremely valuable collection of artworks, including precisely the Bather, which would flow into the State Art Museum of Uzbekistan, until 1935 located in Prince Romanov's palace and to be considered one of the most important museums of Western art in Central Asia. Returning to the subject, it is masterfully rendered by the painter, who has become impracticed over the course of his career in female figures caught in their nudity; the lascivious gaze, the seductive forms, and the genuinely sensual pose are fused into a single swirl that continues in the voluminous cloth used to dry his legs. The theme, the full, luminous brushstrokes, and the erotic charge are fully in keeping with the Romantic taste for female portraits found in such coeval painters as Francesco Hayez in Italy or Eugène Delacroix in France.

The Bather by Childe Hassam

The Bather
Signed and dated “Childe Hassam” (lower right)
Oil on canvas
Considered by many to be America’s foremost Impressionist painter, Childe Hassam composed his tranquil and intimate oil on canvas The Bather in the early years of the 20th century. The creation of the artwork aligns with a period of Hassam’s career where the artist’s palette was transforming, matching ever closer with the pale and pastel hues of French Impressionists like Claude Monet. Even the subject — a nude woman — represents a greater alignment with the Impressionist project, as artists of the movement and their non-mythological and non-biblical nudes still generated cries of indecency. With Hassam’s signature brushwork and attention to color, The Bather serves as a dream-like vision, serene and sensuous, of a young woman bathing in a lush forest.
While the artist's skill for landscape painting is on display, it is Hassam's command of form, light and color that brings this canvas to life. He creates a captivating composition, placing the nude subject in the bottom left of the canvas. The soft, undulating curves of the woman's body in contrapposto and the glow of her fair skin are balanced by the strong verticals and deep earth tones of the tall trees to her right. Hassam delicately frames the nude in the vivid blues of the distant water, building luminous color that further draws the viewer’s eye and results in a somewhat voyeuristic appeal — endowing his nude with both a natural innocence and an intentional sensuality.
Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Childe Hassam began his artistic career as a freelance illustrator, working for national publications such as Harper’s Weekly, Scribner’s Monthly, and The Century. His first solo exhibition of watercolors took place in Boston in 1883, and he quickly catapulted onto the international scene, winning a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1889. The year before the present work was created, he received the Webb Prize from the Society of American Artists for another landscape painted at Gloucester. Hassam would receive numerous other awards throughout his career, most notably the Gold Medal for Distinguished Services to Fine Art from the American Dealers Association. A true master, Hassam depicted a way of life characteristic of both American and French society, and his work elucidates a critical chapter in American art history. Today, his work resides in the Oval Office of the White House and in numerous important museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, among others.
This painting will be included in Stuart P. Feld's and Kathleen M. Burnside's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
