About the Item
Charles Kvapil (1884-1958) "The Bather," massive oil painting on canvas signed lower right "Kvapil 1936."
Charles Kvapil, born in Czechoslovakia and naturalized Belgian, is a painter belonging to the Paris School.
Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he began exhibiting in 1908. He soon moved to Paris, first to rue d'Alésia and then to Montmartre, in the Hameau des Artistes, between rue Lepic and rue Junot, where he would spend his entire life. His early years in Paris were not easy: he had to work for a living and painted at night when he returned.
At the 1920 Salon des Indépendants, Kvapil revealed himself to the Parisian public, ".... bohemian painter for whom Montparnasse was the terrain of his endeavors and model of life." In 1923, his works were exhibited by Marcel Bernheim, then by Dalpeyrat, in Limoges, where he exhibited mainly landscapes. He then participated in the Salon d'Automne; at the 1941 Salon he presented Les Phlox and in 1944 À la fenêtre. In 1951, at the same Salon, he exhibited Plaisir d'été and Le Goûter.
Charles Kvapil was influenced by Fauvism and a very tempered Cubism; Paul Cézanne and, to some extent, Henri Matisse (as a colorist), also influenced his style. His art is related to the opaque painting of Frans Hals, Rembrandt, and Chardin. Charles Kvapil's paintings are original and modern; his nudes and bouquets of flowers are strong and powerful. His palette is rich in cobalt blues and warm colors. His technique is thoughtful and powerful. The celebrated critic Béran, in a study dedicated to him, praises the richness of his subject matter and all that his art owes to the joy of life.
During his lifetime, he exhibited in Paris, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Italy, Stockholm, London and New York. Today it is in numerous public and private collections, including the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris and museums in Le Havre, Libourne, Rouen, Saint-Étienne, Amsterdam, and Tunis.
The full force of the nude painter Kvapil emerges in this beautiful painting: a young woman sitting on a rock on a bright red cloth with white flowers, drying herself after bathing; behind her, a seascape with sailboats dotting the horizon. The beautiful girl has tanned skin, her fresh face lit by a shy smile that relaxes her red lips.
This painting is striking, both visually and decoratively; the considerable size tells us that this is a work made for an important client, especially considering that most of Kvapil's works have a standard size of 50 x 60. Not only that, the frame bears the inscription "This painting was restored by Kvapil himself in 1945."
The painting is in excellent condition. It still has its original frame, labeled by the Parisian framer from whom Kvapil bought it, made of shaped wood and gilded. Accompanied by its Fine Arts export certificate, it is ready to be hung.

Charles Kvapil
Charles Kvapil was born in 1884 in Antwerp, Belgium, of Czech origin. He exhibited his first works there in 1908 at the Salon d'Anvers. After the war he attended l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp and began to exhibit in Paris in 1920 at the Salon des Indépendants. Kvapil was known primarily as a painter of people, in particular of curvaceous nudes. He moved into a studio in Montmartre where he painted his models in the studio with Sacre Coeur as backdrop. He also painted in the countryside like the Impressionists. Kvapil's paintings are creative and modern; his nudes and bouquets of flowers are energetic and powerful. His palette is rich in cobalt blues and in fiery earth tones. His technique is intuitive and confident. Although his oils were often modestly presented on panels of wood or soft board, those formats did not detract from the evident talent he displayed nor from the joy exemplified in his paintings. His paintings are vigorously sought after when they become available at the international auction houses. He is now represented in many public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, in the museums of Le Havre, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Amsterdam and Tunis. He exhibited in his lifetime in Paris, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Rome, in Stockholm, London and New York.

"In the past I worked on light and shadow effects. Now I paint exclusively for unusual effects and color harmonies." It is with these words that Martin Borgord, a Norwegian-born but naturalized American painter, interviewed by a journalist from the Hartford Courant, explains our painting.Straddling the line between Impressionism and Expressionism, the elegant lady loses the sharpness of detail, blending with light and color in quick, dense brushstrokes.
