Aboard an Egyptian felucca, an elegant princess, richly attired and adorned with marvelous jewels and a sumptuous gold diadem, plies the waters of the Nile River, within which other traditional vessels move, their banks presented as lush and verdant.
This evocative painting was executed by the painter Diana Coomans: born in Paris to the celebrated Belgian artist Pierre Olivier Joseph Coomans (1816-1889) and Adelaide Lacroix (1838-1884), she conducted her artistic training in her father's workshop, at which her brothers Heva Coomans and Oscar-Jean Coomans (1848-1884), both painters, also learned their first rudiments in art. As did Heva and Oscar-Jean, Diana Coomans specialized in neo-Romantic subjects, preferring, in most of her works, the depiction of female figures in the Pompeian style. Diana Coomans left a marked mark on the art world with her depictions of scenes from the life of ancient Pompeii: among her most famous works is certainly The Gynecium, from 1885, a work included in Women Painters of the World, a pioneering effort to reconstruct the work of women painters from the Renaissance to the modern age, published in London in 1905 and edited by Welsh painter and writer Walter Shaw Sparrow (1862-1940).
The painting's palette is rich and vibrant, with a bold combination of warm and cool colors. The red of the drape, the iridescent white of the tunic, and the green of the trees create an interesting color contrast, which catalyzes the viewer's eye: the vibrancy of the elected hues is a key feature of several of Coomans' paintings, as found in such paintings as The Offering to Cupid, Nymph at the Fountain, The Fruit Seller, and Woman with a Little Bird. In the canvas under review, the extreme technical skill of the artist from the dynasty of painters of Belgian origin emerges clearly, able to master with naturalness a confident and decisive brushstroke with regard to the fascinating female figure, but at the same time tenuous and delicate for the setting, in which the splendid fan of soft feathers and the elaborate floral composition stand out for realism. The canvas, played entirely on the psychological tension emanating from the absorbed and seductive gaze of the protagonist, in full romantic afflatus, and on the mesmerizing impact of the chromatic vivacity, highlights Coomans' extraordinary attention to minute detail, depicted in a lenticular manner. Our painting is a valuable example of Diana Coomans' talent for combining realistic depiction of the human figure with elements of landscape and still life, creating an evocative and striking work of art.
