About the Item

Wonderful modernist abstract figurative expressionist painting in black and white of two figures, lovers (for the film Play Misty For Me), 1971 by California artist Don Heitkotter (American, b.1932). Don was commissioned by Clint Eastwood to paint 3 portraits of Clint for the movie, Play Misty For me. This is a study of a nude scene from the movie. Some craquelure in the white background areas. Signed lower center. Presented in painted wood frame with gilt inner edge. Image size: 40"H x 30"W. Heitkotter, who has had his art decorate the walls of the summer White House during the Nixon administration and was hired by actor Clint Eastwood for paintings used in the movie “Play Misty for Me,” says he knew he was destined to became an artist at an early age. As a child he showed tremendous interest in art. At the age of 16, he dropped out of high school and became a paratrooper for the United States Army. He left after almost three years, and returned to the San Jose area, where he became a professional boxer. He married an English literature professor, and did some part-time work as a billboard sign painter. After eight years of boxing, Heitkotter left boxing to paint signs full-time. A few years later, he decided to leave that job, and concentrate on his own paintings. “-in the first year, I had three paintings hanging on the walls of the White House. And the Clint Eastwood thing came along then, too.” The “Clint Eastwood thing” Heitkotter refers to are the original portraits he painted for “Play Misty for Me,” a 1971 suspense film that was Eastwood’s directorial debut. Eastwood hired Heitkotter to paint a portrait of the actor, which is slashed to pieces in the film by an obsessed fan, played by Jessica Walter. In addition to the paintings for the film, Heitkotter also painted landscapes of the San Juan hillsides, full of bright yellows and blues, as well as farm scenes. He painted a series of landscapes called “The Storytellers”, which shows a moonlit lake surrounded by trees with a canoe and two figures, referring to the artist and his brothers. Heitkotter has had several galleries over the years, settling in San Juan Bautista, in 2008 in hopes of helping contribute to the town’s burgeoning art community. Previously, he had a gallery in Campbell since 1970. “I tend to classify most of my work as romantic realism, but I paint everything,” Heitkotter, 76, said in 2008. “I’m not afraid of expressing myself.”
