About the Item
Initialed lower right, 'GP', titled, 'Paris' and dated 1911; additionally signed, verso, and with art-supplier's stamp, 'Paul Foinet Fils, 21 rue Bréa, Paris'.
A stunning, character-driven study of the artist's model, "Carmen', painted during Pauli's second Paris period when he resolutely abandoned his earlier Beaux-Arts style to assert his mastery of the principles of Modernism.
Born in Sweden, Georg Pauli studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm from 1871-75 and, again, from 1878-79. He was a member of the ‘Opponenterna’, (the Opponents), the group of artists that included Anders Leonard Zorn, and who opposed what they viewed as the staid conservatism of the Royal Academy. They later founded ‘The League of Artists’ to represent modern Scandinavian art at the European Salons. In the late 1870's. Pauli, along with a number of other Scandinavian artists, moved to Grez-sur-Loing, a village outside Paris that was close to Barbizon that had been painted by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. Others Danish artists who made this their home included Carl Larsson (1853-1919) and his wife Karin Bergöö (1859-1928), who he met there; August Strindberg (1849-1912), Bruno Liljefors (1860-1939), Julia Beck, Peder Krøyer (1851-1909), Pauli and his future wife Hanna Hirsch (1864-1940). Prominent American artists who summered there included John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) and Robert Vonnoh (1858-1933).
In the late 1870’s, Pauli attended the Académie Julian in Paris where he became an admirer of the Naturalism movement whose leading proponent was Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884). Lepage's paintings, “Les Foins” of 1877 (Musée d’Orsay) and “October” 1878, (National Gallery of Victoria), were to prove hugely influential in the development of Pauli's Beaux-Arts period. These two works, together with those of Léon Augustin L'hermitte, a fellow painter of Naturalism, were the inspiration for Pauli’s “La Collation des Paysans a la Recolte du Colza, Calvados”, widely acknowledged to be the artist’s masterpiece. This was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1885 where it received an honorable mention. Pauli went on to exhibit at the Salons of 1889 and 1900. In 1887, he married the artist Hannah Hirsch and they subsequently traveled and studied in Italy where Pauli made a particular study of fresco painting, a medium for which he would later become celebrated in his native Sweden. On returning home, he began to receive numerous private and public commissions for fresco installations and substantial works from this period may be seen in the Gothenburg City Museum, formerly the East India Company headquarters, at Stockholm City Hall and at the Royal Theatre among other substantial public buildings.
In addition to his career as a fine artist, Pauli was also a prolific author who published works on art history and art theory, writing on the development of Danish art and, in particular, ‘The Opponents’. In 1911, Pauli returned to Paris where he studied at the studio of André Lhote (1885-1962). Here he advanced his understanding of Modernist principles and developed an increasing interest in Cubism. The painting offered here dates to 1911, the first year of the artist's second Paris period.
Over the course of a long career, Pauli exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards. The artist is well-listed in all relevant art reference works and his paintings are held in private and public collections, including in the permanent collections of the Gothenburg Museum, the Helsinki Museum, the National Gallery of Finland. and the Swedish National Gallery in Stockholm.

View All'Seated Nude', Paris, Royal Danish Academy, Charlottenborg, Bornholm, Benezit
Located in Santa Cruz, CA
Signed lower right, 'Mogens Hertz' (Danish, 1909-1999) and dated 1949.
A large, Post-Impressionist figural oil showing a pregnant young woman, draped from the waist down, with her hands resting serenely in her lap. Seated beside a garden door, she is gently dappled by golden sunlight that filters in through verdant foliage. Painted when the artist was forty years old, Hertz has accomplished a lyrical, light-suffused study of his beautiful and enigmatic young subject.
Mogens Hertz first studied with the Academician, Laurits Ring and, subsequently, with the Danish Impressionist, Rostrup Boyesen. In 1930, after an influential study trip to Paris, Hertz continued his formal studies at Copenhagen's Charlottenborg Academy before moving to the countryside outside Gudhjem. There, he became a co-founder of the Bornholm School. His work there came to exemplify the group's lyrical portrayal of idyllic landscapes, painted in a loose and painterly, Impressionist style that often borders on abstraction.
From 1930-1941, Hertz traveled and studied widely, including to France, Holland, Germany, Norway and Sweden. He was the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards including the August Schiøtt scholarship (1948) and the Frederik Sødring prize (1939). Over the course of a long and distinguished career, he exhibited widely and with success including, from 1937, at the Royal Danish Academy's Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition, at the Bornholm Art Museum and the Vejen Art Museum, among others. Mogens Hertz is well-listed in relevant art biographical reference works including Benezit's definitive dictionary of artists. We are pleased to offer a major work from the artist's middle period.
