Large reclining female nude, fauvist oil on canvas by Jean Arène (1929 - 2020).
This large representation of a female nude reclining on a highly decorative kilim is inspired by Gaugin and his series of paintings of Polynesian women during his travels to the pacific islands. Jean Arène was a student of August Chabaud, a highly sought after French artist in Provence who in turn took his inspiration from Cezanne. The dark outlining of the apples are highly reminiscent of Cezanne's work. This large piece has a peacefulness to it with the figure in repose and yet with its highly coloured background the image really makes a strong impression. A real eye-catching piece.
