Life Drawing Class

1930

About the Item

Leighton Hall Woollatt Life Drawing Class 1905-1974 Oil on canvas, dated '1930' on verso Image size: 26 x 18 inches (66 x 45.7 cm) Handmade contemporary frame In this painting the seated nude life drawing model is captured from the side. Depicted within the class, Woollatt captures an art student behind the model, working on a canvas that inadvertently reflects what is happening behind our own perspective. The figure, sitting almost uncomfortably on her wooden box, is depicted by Woollatt as both innocent and powerful, hunched over but with a firm positioning of her legs as though she is ready to spring upwards. Leighton Hall Woollatt Leighton Hall Woollatt (1905-1974) was an esteemed English sculptor and artist born in Nottingham. He was the son of lithograph artist Edgar Woollatt. Pursuing his studies at Nottingham College of Art, the Royal Academy schools as well as Chelsea Polytechnic, Woollatt garnered recognition through numerous scholarships and awards. Woollatt’s prolific career included teaching at various art schools across Britain and exhibited his works at the Royal Academy of Arts, Art Council shows and at provincial galleries. As an official War artist during World War II, Woollatt produced significant war paintings now housed at the Exeter Records Office. Known for his decorative panels, portraits and topographical subjects, he also completed notable mural works in Nottingham and at the Bank of England. Woollatt spent his later years in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, continuing his artistic pursuits until his death in 1974. Reclining Nude, 20th Century Oil
By James Stroudley
Located in London, GB
James Stroudley 1906 -1985 Reclining Nude Oil on canvas, signed lower left Image size: 17 x 25 inches Original frame James Stroudley was born in London on 17 June 1906, the son of James Stroudley, showcard and ticket writer. He studied at Clapham School of Art (1923-27) and then at the Royal College of Art (1927-30), where his teachers included Alan Gwynne-Jones and William Rothenstein. As a recipient of the first Abbey Scholarship he was able to spend three years in Italy from 1930, where he absorbed the influences of Giotto and Piero della Francesca, and produced one of the last wholly satisfying decorative cycles by a Rome Scholar of the period. From 1934, he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, and was elected to its membership in the following year. From the Second World War – in which he worked with the Camouflage Unit – Stroudley taught at St Martin’s School of Art and was a visiting lecturer at the Royal Academy Schools. Though he continued to live in London, his later work, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1955, indicated regular painting trips to Kent and Sussex coasts. However, much of his later work was abstract. In 1971, his former student, Peter Coker...

The Fortune Teller
Located in London, GB
Herbert Ashwin Budd The Fortune Teller 1881-1950 Oil on canvas, signed 'H.A Budd' lower right Image size: 18 ½ x 14 ¾ inches (47 x 37.5cm) Original frame Rendered in an almost autumnal colour palette with Darnley Fine Art, Budd’s oil painting depicts a Romani Gypsy engaging in the practice of fortune-telling whilst an enraptured crowd watches on. Clasped in the fortune-teller’s hand is a crystal ball, whilst behind him is a wall on which a deck of cards is pinned. Crystallomancy and cartomancy are two ways in which fortunes have historically been told, and are two practices particularly associated with Roma communities. In communities where Romani people have historically been confined to the periphery, fortune-telling - or dukkering, as it is called in the Romani language - provided an opportunity to earn money whilst practicing their own culture. Budd was known for his paintings depicting scenes of life from London, so it is likely that the setting of this painting is an anonymous London street. It is easy to see a continuity between the performer depicted in this work from the early 20th century, and the variety of magicians and acrobats enticing crowds in today’s world. Herbert Ashwin Budd Herbert Ashwin Budd was born in Staffordshire in 1881. In his twenties, he was an apprentice lithographer at Allbut & Stanley, and was eventually elected a member of the Amalgamated Society of Lithographic Artists in 1901. Between 1903 and 1907, Budd studied at the Hanley School of Art before winning a scholarship to study at South Kensington’s Royal College of Art. Budd was an Associate of the Royal College of Arts and a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. His works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and the Ipswich Art Club - he was also given an Honourable Mention at the 1927 Paris Salon. In the 1930s, he worked for London Transport and designed their travel posters, whilst also teaching at St Martin’s School of Art until 1949.Herbert Ashwin Budd passed away in 1950, leaving behind a wonderful artistic legacy with his striking oil paintings of London...

Untitled
By Nathan Oliveira
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A painting by Nathan Oliveira. "Untitled" is a Bay Area Figurative Painting, oil on canvas in a brown and tan palette by American artist Nathan Oliveira. The artwork is signed in the lower right, "Oliveira 64". A Californian whose work is of preeminent importance during the post war period, Oliveira is most often associated with Park, Diebenkorn and the other artists with whom he sketched early in his career. Yet it was not an oversight when Oakland Museum director Paul Mills chose not to include Oliveira in the 1957 exhibition “Contemporary Bay Area Figurative Painting.” All came to figuration by initiating a sophisticated dialogue with abstraction, yet it is Oliveira, the often characterized ambivalent loner among Bay Area artists whose work is most often compared to Alberto Giacometti, Francis Bacon, or Willem de Kooning with whom he shared walls and space at The Images of Man exhibition held in New York at the Museum of Modern Art in 1959. During the early years, Oliveira’s lone figures often suggested an existential angst similar to that of Giacometti, but there was also a weightlessness and a transcendent aura that envelopes these figures; they appear as elemental, universal and eternal projections of selfless consciousness better understood within the bodiless realm of metaphysics. These qualities would remain in his work throughout his long career, yet he would find other themes to explore — the natural world where the essential nature of birds and animals exist in equal profundity with their human counterparts, the transient world of evanescent perception when memory must reconstruct momentary experience, and later, the ‘site’ paintings and monoprints that suggest the abandoned remnants of a long-lost civilization or tribe uncovered at an archeological dig. Through and through, flesh to bones, and bones to dust Nathan Oliveira has left us with a legacy of art that will surely remain untarnished by time or changing trends. His work exists within a realm rarely achieved by artists striving in a similar mode of expression. Unclouded by ego or wayward sentiment, it is also in the warmth and humble nature...
