About the Item
"Lady Lee" and "My Neighbors" are two original oil paintings executed on either side of a wood panel by Wisconsin artist Robert Richter. This fun and playful piece is large enough to act as a room divider, which would keep both sides visible. The "Lady Lee" side depicts a nude woman riding a horse, turning to look over her shoulder and wave at the viewer. The large white horse is viewed from the side and raises one of its forelegs. There is no saddle or bridle for the rider, which lets a wild and free spirit to the piece, emphasized by the lush green background. On the "My Neighbors" side, Richter has painted a hillside down, viewed from one side of a tall wooden fence. The light brown color of the houses that disappear up the hill brings to mind a Tuscan city against a vivid blue sky.

Artist Statement:
"I was born in Milwaukee over half-a-century ago in the year of the horse. I started painting in earnest when I was eight years old. My parents saw that it might be nice for me to take some art lessons. I spent Saturdays in those days drawing Superman and Batman (Batwoman too, Ha!) from comic books. My formative brain was stamped with the creedo that one cannot make a decent painting without making a decent drawing. To this day it is a self-imposed limitation (?) that opens my world. Later I would graduate from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and then off to New York City with a Fine Art degree.
I painted store front windows, speak easy murals for gangsters, lithographs from aluminum plates for actors, wood paintings for funk musicians, stage sets for theatre, T-shirts, costumes, curtains, wall hangings, furniture, floors- I painted everything, literally. Years later in a distant city, I received a Masters degree in Contemplative Buddhist Studies.
I draw and paint from memory. When I am satisfied with a drawing, I incise it on wood panel. I color it in not too unlike a coloring book, staying pretty much within the lines. It keeps me from getting too carried away. It is a forgiving technique. I do not use photographs. I try to paint the snapshot in my head and heart. Another little thing I like to do is incorporate the sensations of many colors in a single application. A black top road for instance is noted for its peach, lavender, smoky gray yellow and dry blue- to create the sensation of all these colors in a single application. Now that would be some crayola crayon! Another painter once remarked to me, "Why bother". And here is why. I want my paintings to be stunning from across the room, to beckon, as all good paintings should. And then up close, what a surprise! So simply done! Even a cave man can do it!
I am pleased and honored to be currently represented by David Barnett.

The artist comments, “I want my paintings to be stunning from across the room, to beckon, as all good paintings should. And then close up, what a surprise!” The artist lived in New York where he painted literally everything from stage sets to mural commissions. He painted store front windows, lithographs from aluminum plates for actors, T-shirts, costumes, curtains, wall hangings, furniture and floors. His unique experiences, intellect, extraordinary color sensibility result in a stunning style with flavors of Avery, Grant Wood and Matisse, but mostly himself.

What Are They Looking At ? Sexy Nude Naive Caribbean Art , Swimming Pool Party
By Wilson Bigaud
Located in Miami, FL
A young man at a crowded upper-class Haitian swimming pool attracts attention. We see him only from the back in a Magritte-like pose. The transfixed expressions of some of the nubile bare-breasted bathing beauties and one man with his hands down his pants give us a clue that the mystery man is special.
This is a fascinating work packed with drama and overflowing with pent-up emotion.
Bigaud's narrative is as complex as his figural composition of lookers and swimmers. Notice the sight lines of the lookers go back to front while the two swimmers go from left to right. The twenty-two figures are contained in the rectangular shape of the pool, which is pushed to the front of the picture plane. The cars of the pool partygoers are seen in the background with one witness. He is fully clothed and is most likely a chauffeur. The fully clothed female at the pool offering food is a servant. A boxy-looking radio with a pack of cigarettes and the style of the cars give glue to the date. Most Haitian art depicts average working people. The pool party departs from that tradition and shows life of the Haitian upper class. Most likely, this was painted in Petion-Ville. The higher the elevation in Port-au-Prince the more wealthy the homes. Although the artist's painting technique may be described as naive or lacking polish.
t's one of the reasons why the work radiates charm and interest.
The painting is oversized with huge dimensions of 55 x 48 and will be a statement in any room. Wilson Bigaud is considered to be a Haitian master. The condition is good. Three repaired one-inch issues on the extreme center and upper right edge. Visible only on close inspection. Otherwise presents very well and is elegantly framed,
