About the Item
The painting is entitled Arion of Metimna, a poet and cantor of 6th-century B.C. Greece. C., a figure straddling the historical and the mythical. In particular, depicted here is the fanciful episode that made him famous, namely when, as he was about to be killed, he was rescued by a dolphin, attracted by his singing skills.
With his ability to bring to life images that defy time, Meli represents a significant figure on the contemporary art scene: throughout his career he has captured the attention and praise of distinguished art critics, most notably Carlo Del Bravo, with whom he shared "an adolescent love for our fifteenth century." The Tuscan art historian, known for his refined sensitivity and ability to capture the essence of the great masters, recognized in him not only a virtuoso of technique but also an excellent storyteller.
