About the Item

The themes in Tran Huy Hoan’s work are contradictions within themselves. His work is both innocent and erotic. Each subject is attractive yet affecting. Hoan’s precise technical style is at once influenced by both classical and modern. His smooth brush stroke is combined with the soft monotone color palette he uses, bringing an unexpected warmth to enigmatic subject matter. The female he paints are seductive and contain an air of melancholy. They exist in their own sensually esoteric realm, yet at the same time present a sense of accessibility that draws the observer to them. These mysterious young women captivated the mood of the environment they came from.

'Security' Conceptual Nude Portrait
By Dinh Y Nhi
Located in Rye, NY
‘Security’ is a large framed contemporary surrealist figurative oil on canvas painting of vertical format, created by Vietnamese artist Dinh Y Nhi in 2010. Featuring a cold palette mostly made of grey and black tones, accented with blue and beige touches, the painting depicts a frontal view of a nude figure. This piece exemplifies Y Nhi's style of paintings as her success with two-colors; red, blue or black and white, addresses modern themes and issues devoid of gender. Her figurative surrealism style of stick figures is warped and elongated, stretched out of proportion. Each figure tilts and twists at painful angles. They bring to mind the famous harrowing faces in Edward Munch's ‘The Scream’, or the difficult distorted ones from the portraits of Francis Bacon. But most of the faces Y Nhi paints are miniature ones devoid of details, deceptively random and simple brush strokes. There is a playfulness that reflects the outer images the painter projects of herself. Her style also allows her to convey complex textures, and emotions, in her images. Dinh Y Nhi is a graduate of Hanoi's School of Fine Arts. Her work has been exhibited in many shows in Vietnam. She is receiving much notice among the Vietnamese press and art patrons in the United States, Australia and Asian countries. With its powerful presence and great proportions, this surrealist oil on canvas painting will be a definite conversation piece in any home, whether placed above a sofa, console table or enfilade. Set inside a frame, the painting is titled in the lower section. 1967: Born in Hanoi, Vietnam 1989: Graduated from Hanoi Fine Art University Exhibitions: 2011: Group Exhibition Art Asia Miami, Florida, AiBo Fine Asia Art 2011: Portrait, Dinh Y Nhi & Le Thiet Cuong...

Figures on the Beach with Sculpture, Contemporary Surreal Figural Landscape
By Michael Pauker
Located in Soquel, CA
Dark storm clouds loom over a surreal, desolate beach landscape, which is populated by several male figures in different states of being, in this contemplative symbolic contemporary painting by Bay Area artist Michael Pauker (American, b.1957), circa 2013-2014. In the left foreground we see part of a bearded man's face, as if witnessing this scene with the viewer. Next a male figure in bright red bathing suit faces the ocean, his back to the viewer, while a more distant nude male at three quarter view points down at something in the sand. Finally, on the right appears the bearded man as a classical sculpture bust on a pedestal...

Paradox of St. Sebastian - Contemporary Oil Painting with Graffiti and Shackles
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
This figure of St. Sebastian has long been a favorite subjects for artists. In this modern interpretation we see St. Sebastian shackled in chains and leather restraints against an industrial graffiti covered wall. He gazes upwards while his body is pummeled with rubber suction cup darts. Historical references are ripe for interpretation in this painting. St. Sebastian is known as the patron saint for athletes, soldiers and warriors. He is said to have survived his initial wounds from arrows by way of divine intervention only to be beaten to death later after warning the emperor of his sins. St. Sebastian is known to be a protector from plague. Bruno Surdo Paradox of St. Sebastian oil on canvas 60h x 36w in 152.40h x 91.44w cm Bruno A. Surdo b. Jason and Medea - Greek Mythological Couple Inspired Diptych of Love and Tragedy
By Richard Gibbons
Located in Chicago, IL
The Greek myth of Medea, the enchantress who helped Jason, leader of the Argonauts, obtain the magical Golden Fleece, is a classic story of betrayal and vengeance. Like many Greek myths, this one too has a tragic ending. She was of divine descent and had the gift of prophecy and married Jason. Theirs's was a passionate beginning but when Jason found another, Medea made the ultimate sacrifice by killing the children the two shared. Jason, Medea and the Golden Fleece is one of the oldest myths of a hero's quest. Gibbons portrays the hero as a bare-chested god with a halo of roses and gold. The Heroine is portrayed with a golden crown and an aura of golden rays surrounding her. His soft features and partially opened lips and her sultry gaze add to the sensuousness of their passionate love affair. The paintings are framed in a simple walnut wooden frames measuring 21.5 x 17.5 inches each. Richard Gibbons Jason and Medea...
