About the Item

Ganymede was a Trojan prince in Greek mythology, known for his compelling beauty. Because of his alluring good looks, Ganymede was abducted by Zeus to serve as cup-bearer in Olympus. In some versions of the myth Zeus is the eagle, while in others Zeus controls the bird. Homer described Ganymede as the most beautiful of mortals: "Ganymede was the loveliest born of the race of mortals, and therefore the gods caught him away to themselves, to be Zeus' wine-pourer, for the sake of his beauty, so he might be among the immortals". — Homer, Iliad, Book XX, lines 233-235.[3] The myth of Ganymede was a popular one throughout art history. This painting was done in the style of Antoine Coypel. The canvas measures 25.5" x 30" and the frame measures 33" x 36" x 3.5".
