About the Item

Between light and line, stillness and movement, the visual worlds of Walter Strobl unfold – quiet, powerful, and full of inner tension. His nudes depict people in transition, in moments of disappearance as well as emergence. Bodies, barely tangible, move through space and leave behind an echo of presence. In contrast stand his “Thrown Ones,” as the artist calls them. They are forced into the last remaining spaces for physicality, where every movement encounters a physical boundary. Strobl does not merely paint the external form; he traces the body’s memory, its perception, its presence. His still lifes and urban views are characterized by concentrated calm. Mirrors, stones, fragments of facades – they hover on the threshold of change. A breath, a shimmer, a tipping point. Time seems stretched, the moment captured just before it shifts. Landscapes and urban spaces expand, permeated by a deep, breathing stillness. Humans are either absent or fleeting, yet always leave visible traces, imprints of their actions – and through this, space becomes a bearer of memory, of emotion. Boundaries between the animate and inanimate world dissolve in these environments. Born in 1968 in Innsbruck, Walter Strobl now lives and works as a freelance painter in Vienna.

Walter Strobl opens a new chapter in his explorations of the neverending tension between stillness and movement. Strobl´s vibrant nudes capture women in movement: they are there and gone again, letting the pictoral space pulsate with both the presence and absence of the outlines of their bodies. He paints women with a keen interest in the lived experience of the body, avoiding clichees in his depictions. The viewer is excluded from this inner sensation, but it is precisely the privacy of the model`s slumber that permits us to revel in our own proprioception. His cityscapes and still lives tell their...
