Yseult Digan, known as YZ (pronounced “eyes”) is an international acclaimed Franco-British visual artist and street artist.
She was born in 1975 in Chateauroux, in the Centre region of France. She grew up in La Borne (Cher), a small village known for its pottery tradition and surrounded by a forest.
She inherited her love of art from her French father, who was a sculptor, and her English mother, who was a ceramicist. Her upbringing was full of creativity and as a child she was often modelling clay in her mother’s studio, creating little houses and pots. She was also inspired by music which led to her studying audiovisual media. This training led her into filmmaking and documentary work, which she explored for several years, whilst continuing to draw and paint.
She arrived in Paris in 2000 and started painting in the street with a friend, experiencing different urban techniques like spray painting, brushwork and stencils. She soon became enchanted by the works of Ernest Pignon-Ernest. Her interested was not just in image but always in people, identity and portraiture.
In 2003, she launched Open Your Eyes, in collaboration with Missill. In this project she installed 30 large portraits (stencils) on dilapidated walls and buildings around Paris; the positions of the installations when connected on a map reproduce a face itself. This became her first major recognised street-art intervention. She created the original art work on large craft paper sheets, before plastering them up around the city walls like posters. As a result, this urban work had a fleeting, transient quality, becoming part of the cityscape before fading. She later reprised this project in capitals around the world, notably in New York, Berlin, London, Moscow, Brazzaville, Bamako and Hong Kong.
Over time, YZ has developed a distinctive aesthetic: working often in black and white, with Indian ink washes, often on delicate supports like silk paper, craft paper, or other surfaces which interact with texture (metal, wood, brick, etc.).
YZ’s work consistently centres around portraiture and representation, especially women. Her series Women from Another Century (Femmes d’un autre siècle) was inspired by 1920s historical photographs, revived via her delicate techniques, to question beauty standards, gendered stereotypes, memory and identity. The series drew together monochrome portraits of famous and unknown women from the part, both nostalgic yet instantly modern due to their physical surroundings and the choice of medium.
Other series include Angel (inspired by statues / funerary sculpture, etc.), Amazone, Empress, Back to the Roots, and Street Vendors. These explore themes such as female strength and dignity, cultural heritage, colonial history, visibility of people often marginalized by mainstream history or public spaces.
YZ’s work has been exhibited widely: major exhibitions include the Centre Pompidou, Foundation Cartier, the Art Science Museum (Singapore), and more.
In 2017–2018, she was selected by President Emmanuel Macron to design a new image for ‘Marianne’, the allegorical figure which is the symbol of the French Republic. Her design ‘Marianne L’Engagée’ was approved for use on everyday postage stamps.
Other notable commissions include a monumental work for Eurotunnel between Folkestone (UK) and Coquelles (France) and large public wall works in various countries.
YZ sees her art as engaged: she aims to restore visibility, dignity, memory to those figures (often women) forgotten or sidelined by history. She is interested both in the political/historical dimension and the poetic/intimate dimension of her subjects.
The choice of support and material is integral: the textures of surfaces (walls, paper, metal, etc.) are part of the meaning; fragility, temporality (many street works are ephemeral), and the gesture (ink, wash) are essential.
After living and working for many years in places like Senegal and the Ivory Coast YZ currently lives and works in the Montreuil area of France.
She continues to exhibit globally and to produce works both for public spaces and gallery settings. She is represented by French galleries, and her works appear in public art biennales.

A later dedication to “Louise” dated April 1942 in the artist’s hand is set around the earlier signing.
Raymond Moritz was a French impressionist artist and illustrator. He was born in Paris on 8 July 1891. His family came from the Alsace region and were poor and Catholic. On his mother’s side, the Staubs were from Wihr-au-Val where they had been coopers for several generations. His uncle, Marie Clement Staub, was the founder in Canada of the Sisters of Saint Joan of Arc.
Moritz fought during the Great War in the Picardy region of the Somme with the 2nd machine gunner company. He won the French 1914-1918 War medal with bronze palm attachment, which signifies that the awardee was mentioned in dispatches at army level. Moritz obviously created some art during the war because during the inauguration of the new town hall in the town of Albert he was congratulated by the French President, Albert Lebrun, and the British press for the paintings he had produced. Albert was the main town behind the lines for the Allies on the Somme battle fields...
