About the Item
Patrick O'Brien (American, b. 1960)
Framed Dimensions: 30 1/2 x 42 1/1 in.
The USS Constitution was built in Boston, MA in 1791. She was one of the first of the original six frigates that made up the US Navy. She carried fifty-four guys and a crew of more than 450. The CONSTITUTION became famous in the War of 1812 when she scored important victories over the British frigates GUERRIERE and JAVA, demonstrating that Americans could stand up to the greatest navy in the world. She earned her nickname, OLD IRONSIDES, when cannonballs were seen to bounce off her heavy oak hull. The ship was scheduled to be scrapped in 1830, but Oliver Wendell Holmes's poem, OLD IRONSIDES, inspired a public movement to save it. Restored in 1925, the CONSTITUTION is now the oldest commissioned vessel in the US Navy. It now serves as a museum ship at the Charleston Navy Yard in Boston, MA.
