The Hon. Mildmay Fane (c. 1689-1715) was the fifth son of Vere Fane, 4th Earl of Westmorland, inheriting the Burston Estate, Kent in 1692 from his cousin. He was a Whig politician and in 1715 was successful in getting elected over the Tories. A military man as well as a British politician, he is portrayed here, 3/4 length standing pose, wearing a silk embroidered coat with a blue cloak. Later inscribed: My fifth son / Vere E. of Westmorland and inscribed on the back ‘Mildmay 5th son of 4th Earl of Westmorland’. Fane did not survive his election very long, dying unmarried on sept 11th 1715. He left his lands to his brother Col. John Fane who replaced him as the member for Kent in an uncontested by-election.

Alexis Simon Belle was a French portrait painter, particularly renowned for his portraits of the Jacobite and French nobility. He studied under his father, the painter Jean-Baptiste Belle, and then under Francois de Troy, a Court painter to King James II who was then in exile. Belle won the Prix de Rome in 1701 but stayed working in Saint Germaine rather than going to Italy. One of his most famous paintings is the portrait of James Edward Stuart of 1712. Many of his works were engraved and he was both very successful and very well connected within the French and Jacobite courts. An important portrait painter at this time.
