About the Item
On offer is a portrait of an unknown sitter who is rendered with profound dignity yet lifted from gloomy solemnity by a vibrant and intriguing background. Notably, artist Boris Deutsch’s skills were such that he painted portraits of film luminaries including Charlie Chaplin and Gloria Swanson in earlier years.
But perhaps this deeper spiritual sense sprung from Deutsch’s youthful preparation to be a rabbi and his long study of the Talmud. While still young, his own character-forming life experiences began with birth in Lithuania in 1892, then art study in Berlin, and upon returning home, conscription into the Ukrainian army during World War I. When the opportunity arose, a chance to desert took the artist along a route into China, stopping in Harbin, on to Liaoyuan, then to Shanghai, and then at last to Japan, where in 1916 he boarded a ship in Hiroshima bound for Seattle. After several years there, he left for Los Angeles, where he remained for the rest of his life, pursuing a career not only as a portraitist and sought after muralist, but also at Paramount Pictures in their special effects department. He was also involved with the city’s noted Otis College of Art and Design.
Deutsch’s figurative works have been included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Norton Simon Museum, the Smithsonian’s American Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, the Carnegie Institute, and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
In 2012, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College paired the lithographs and charcoal drawings by Thomas Hart Benton and Boris Deutsch for their exhibition “In the Field.” Should you be feeling curatorial, you may want this piece on exhibit in your own gallery space.

Boris Deutsch
Boris Deutsch (1892-1978) was a 20th century modernist figurative painter and printmaker. He was born in Krasnagorka, Lithuania on June 4, 1892. Deutsch began drawing at age five and remained a self-taught artist, except for brief intervals at the Bloom Academy of Art in Riga, Latvia and the Kunstgewerbe Schule in Berlin. He moved to Seattle, WA in 1916 and then to Los Angeles in 2019. He began his career as a commercial art and set designer for movies. In the late 1930's he was recruited to paint murals for the New Deal, WPA, receiving numerous mural commissions to paint murals for the treasury department and several post office buildings. In 1941 he won the large competition to decorate the Terminal Annex Post Office in Los Angeles with eleven large murals. During the last decade of his life he experimented with monotypes and other printmaking techniques. Deutsch died in Los Angeles on Jan. 16, 1978. Boris Deutsch's art has been the focus of many exhibitions, including: The University of California, Los Angeles in 1926, The Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco in 1930, Oakland Art Gallery in 1937, The University of Southern California (USC) in 1939, The Whitney Museum in New York in 1946 and a centennial exhibition by the Judah l. Magnes Museum in Berkeley California in 1992. In 1955, Marc Chagall called him the greatest Jewish artist of our time. Deutch's works are held by several institutions and museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Scribal Museum, the Judah L. Magnes Museum Berkeley, California, and the Pomona College Museum of Art.

Mid-Century Modern Man - Portrait in Oil on Canvas
Located in Soquel, CA
Subtle and moody portrait of a Pensive man by Joan Tidwell (American, 1930-2002). The sitter in the portrait is a middle-aged man looking slightly downwards, wearing a collared shirt. This piece is completed in a tan and green palette, creating a somber feeling. Of particular note are the confident, thick brushstrokes - each one is well-placed in the modernist style. Similar in some ways to Picasso's portraits.
Signed "Joan Tidwell" on verso
