About the Item
Cubist acrylic and oil on board in the modern form of a stylised portrait by French artist Créqule. Signed bottom right. The painting is presented in a patinated wood frame under glass.
Very modern in style with its flat planes and bold colours this piece is a refreshing take on a portrait in which the sitter remains anonymous except for the strong statement of the portrayal of the facial features. The way the colours are patchworked is reminiscent of the harlequin pattern, a theme which was made very prominent by artists such as Picasso and André l'Hôte. The distinct fields of colour also hark back to the colour field style employed by Nicolas de Staël. All these elements give us the impression of a picture painted in the 1950s ( mid-century ). Modern in style with elements of abstract geometric, this painting has it all.
Créqule is a Provencal artist currently working in Saint Maxime on the Côte d'Azur just across the bay from St. Tropez.

Dick Beer (1893-1938)
Dick Beer was born in London in 1893. His father, John Beer (1853-1906), was a Swedish painter from Stockholm who had a career mainly as a watercolour painter with motifs of horses from racetracks and fox hunts from the countryside.
Barely fifteen years old, Dick Beer became an orphan and came to Sweden in 1907. Already in 1908-1909, he started at Althin's painting school in Stockholm. And later, at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1910-1912. His teachers were, among others, Gustaf Cederström, Oscar Björk and Alfred Bergström...
