Charles Jervas, who was born in Clonlisk, Ireland about the year 1675 and was one of the most prolific and sought after portrait painters of his day. Kings, Queens, ladies and gentlemen of high society and many famous poets and writers sat for him. His work is on display in many of the stately homes of England and in the art galleries of Paris, London and Dublin. The National Gallery of Ireland has a number of paintings by Jervas in the Collection, two of which are on display in the Shaw Room at the Gallery. He was a son of John and Elizabeth Jervas. His mother was a daughter of John Baldwin of Corolanty and Clonlisk, who in 1666, together with William Flower, obtained a patent* of Shinrone and Kilballyskea in addition to a castle, (probably Corolanty) and 2.678 acres. He had four brothers. John, Martin, Matthew and Trevor, and two sisters. Lucy and Mary.
Early in his life, he left Shinrone and went to London where he studied in Kneller's Academy and became his assistant. Norris, the Keeper of the King's pictures, became his patron and allowed him to copy paintings at Hampton Court. With financial help from his friends, and the money he made from selling copies of Raphael's cartoons, he set out for Italy to study art and especially drawing. While in Italy, he made many copies of the Old Masters.
On his return to England in 1709, he became fashionable as a portrait painter. He was referred to by Steele in The Tatler as,'the last great painter Italy has sent us.' He married a wealthy widow and settled down in a spacious home in Hampton, where he entertained and painted such literary celebrities as Addison, Swift, and Pope. He gave lessons in painting to Pope for about a year and a half. Jervas visited Ireland on three occasions and during his stay he painted several portraits, including those of Swift and Thomas Parnell. There is no record of him having returned to Shinrone or Clonlisk.
On the death of Kneller in 1723, Jervas was appointed Principal Painter to King George I and continued to hold the same position under George II. Inspired by his association with the literary giants of his day, he made a translation of Don Quixote. He visited Italy once more in 1738 to buy pictures for the King. but owing to failing health, he remained only for a short time. He died at his brother-in-laws house the following year in 1739. He was a great collector of art, so much so, that the sale of his works after his death took nine days. The last reference we have to the Jervas family in the parish, is an entry in the Deaths Register of the Shinrone Church of Ireland, recording the death and burial of William Jervas in the year 1800.

Charles Jervas
Charles Jervas was born in Dublin in 1675 who later lived in England. After moving to England, Jervas became an apprentice to the painter Sir Godfrey Kneller. He later studied drawing in Rome and then returned (c. 1709) to England. Succeeding Kneller, he became court painter to the English kings George I and George II. His home became a centre for literary figures, among them Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift, whose portraits Jervas painted, in addition to that of George II (1728). He produced a translation of Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote (published posthumously, with his surname spelled Jarvis, in 1742).

Louise Abbéma (30 October 1853[1] – 10 July 1927) was a French painter, sculptor, and designer of the Belle Époque.
Abbéma was born in Étampes, Essonne
Born into a wealthy aristocratic Parisian family with close ties to the city’s artistic community, She began painting in her early teens, and studied under such notables of the period as Charles Joshua Chaplin, Jean-Jacques Henner and Carolus-Duran. Portraits of actors and actresses at the Comédie Française dominated her early works until she made a name for herself at the Salon of 1876 with her portrayal of the “Divine Sarah.” Abbéma ultimately executed multiple portraits and received recognition for her work at age 23 a bronze medallion of Sarah Bernhardt, with whom she was a close friend and possibly lover.
Like most women artists of the time, Abbéma focused mainly on portraiture and genre scenes (images of everyday life). Her high-society portraits executed with a light touch and rapid brushstrokes reveal the academic and Impressionist influences that shaped her style. Her sitters included French diplomats and other notable members of society. Abbéma developed a variety of techniques using oil paints, pastel, and watercolor, and worked on various supports, including fans.
Abbéma received commissions for panels and murals which adorned the Paris Town Hall, the Paris Opera House, numerous theatres including the Theatre Sarah Bernhardt, and the "Palace of the Colonial Governor" at Dakar, Senegal. Abbéma solidified her international reputation after exhibiting works, including two wall murals (on canvas), at the Women’s Building at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. A bust of Sarah Bernhardt sculpted by Abbéma was also exhibited at the exposition.
Abbéma specialized in oil portraits and watercolors, and many of her works showed the influence from Chinese and Japanese painters, as well as contemporary masters such as Édouard Manet. She frequently depicted flowers in her works.

Frank Dicksee was a member of a noted artistic family, his father, brother, and sister Margaret were all well-known painters, and the family lived in the Bloomsbury area of London. He was initially trained by his father, before entering the Royal Academy schools in 1870. Amongst the visiting lecturers who trained him, were the famous senior academicians Leighton [1830-1896] and Millais [1829-1896].
Dicksee was a star student, earning many distinctions and medals. Like many other artists of the day his early career was largely spent in book illustration, as well as some stained glass window design. He started exhibiting at the RA in the mid 1870s, and also exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, though his real base was always the Academy. Dicksee made his reputation with Harmony, exhibited at the Academy in 1877, and bought by the Chantry Bequest.
Frank Dicksee was elected ARA in 1881, and became a full RA ten years later. Many of his pictures were of dramatic historical and legendary scenes. He also was a noted painter of elegant, highly-finished portraits of fashionable women, which of course helped to bring him material success. Many of these portraits are so beautiful, it is really difficult to disapprove of them - happy was the fashionable lady whose portrait was painted by Dicksee! He also painted landscapes.
Dicksee lived in St John's Wood, and remained a bachelor. He was, of course, one of the nineteenth century artists who outlived his time, and was, to his credit, very unhappy with developments in the early twentieth century. Rather surprisingly, Dicksee was elected President of the Royal Academy in 1924, fulfilling the role with panache and tact.
