About the Item

Diego Glazer's beautiful original impressionist oil portrait painting "El Rancho de Gaby" (2022) is a depicts an abuela resting contently at her ranch, capturing the color and tone of the moment, with the daytime sun rays casting over the scene. Artist Statement: I was born in Nebraska, USA, and grew up in Querétaro, Mexico. I also have a Swiss nationality, which has exposed me to a variety of cultures from a young age. As an artist who explores the infinite possibilities that oil painting offers, I seek to create tangible, albeit ambiguous, atmospheres tinged with emotion. I began my career as an artist by taking several workshops in Querétaro, and then went on to study a degree in visual arts at the Instituto Allende, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. In 2014, I moved to Florence, Italy, where I completed the three-year drawing and painting program at the Angel Academy of Art. There I learned the academic methods of the 19th century French school of painting, which proved essential in my path as figurative painter. I've held exhibitions in several cities in Mexico and the United States. I have also won awards and recognitions in several international competitions including ARC Salon, Mod Portrait, Plein Air Salon and Salmagundi Club. I am currently studying in Denver, Colorado under Daniel Sprick, where I explores creating scenes that combine a variety of elements. I paint the human figure in interaction with architecture, animals and landscape, to create dynamic narratives. A CONVERSATION WITH THE ARTIST What does your work aim to say? More than attempting to convey a conceptual or informative message, I strive to communicate emotionally through shapes, color harmony and tension in my work. The thoughtful arrangement of these abstract elements forming a recognizable image can take a viewer to a place of hope, despair, or even through a whole range of complex emotions. Who are your biggest influences? The work that inspires me the most was produced during the 19th century by European and North American masters, who produced highly poetic paintings that romanticized and redesigned the world around us. I’ve also been greatly influenced by artists active during the golden age of illustration such as Howard Pyle or NC Wyeth, as well as contemporary realists such as Joseph McGurl. What draws you to creating representational work? Figurative paintings provide a straightforward manner of communicating a mood or narrative which the artist can design quite deliberately. To me, viewing great representational art feels akin to a cinematic experience. I love the way a skilled artist can take suggestions from the visual world and evoke an emotional experience in the observer. What is your technical approach to painting? I consider myself an indirect painter, meaning I work in several layers. By alternating between layers with varying thickness and opacity, I create complex surface qualities that emulate those seen in the natural world. For instance, I would paint a brick using rough, grainy paint application, while I might apply skin tones in a smoother fashion. How has your style changed over time? My style has wavered from smooth and naturalistic, to rough and energetic. I am currently working somewhere in between, rendering things carefully where necessary, and leaving them loose and casual where it’s appropriate. If you could give a younger you any advice, what would it be? Be open-minded, while simultaneously being careful to discern what is useful advice and what is not. I was privileged to be born with three nationalities: Mexican, American and Swiss. Being born in the States and growing up in Mexico has shown me different facets of the human experience. The Swiss in me has a desire for perfection. The Mexican part of me is able to thrive in any sort of conditions, while my American side desires to innovate, while respecting traditions.
