Tooker, George (American, 1920-2011). PORTRAIT HEAD OF JARO FABRY. Oil on canvas, not dated, but before 1953. 20 x 16 inches. In very good condition, with minor retouching. Framed to 24 x 20 inches. Provenance, Marisa del Re Gallery, Inc. New York; Donny Malone Auction Gallery, Saugerties, New York; a private collector; Skinner Auctions, Boston, MA. A note accompanying the lot, written on a George Tooker exhibition announcement postcard (1985) from Marisa del Re Gallery, Inc., New York, indicates that the canvas was inscribed on the reverse with the name of the sitter, Jaro Fabry, now covered due to lining. Fabry (1912-1953) was an artist and illustrator, working primarily in Hollywood from the 1930s until his death. His work appeared in the New Yorker, Colliers and other popular magazines. A book about his work, "Jaro Fabry: The Art of Fashion, Style, And Hollywood In The 1930s - 1940s" was published in 2008 with an introduction by Alex Chun. George Tooker was a friend and protege of Paul Cadmus and a member of the circle which included Lincoln Kirstein, Jared French and George Platt Lynes. He studied with Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League, was included in the 1946 Exhibition "Fourteen American" at MOMA, and went on to have a distinguished career despite creating work which went against the fashion of his time, and was awarded The National Medal of Arts in 2007. His work is difficult to characterize or place within a movement; its content is often expressive of isolation and anxiety, while its execution relies on renaissance-era techniques such as egg tempera.This portrait suggests straightforward representation, yet in its presentation places it in the tradition of Renaissance portraiture.
