Henri Gervex was the son of Joséphine Peltier and Félix Nicolas Gervex, a piano maker. A family friend helped him gain admission to the studio of painter Pierre-Nicolas Brisset in 1867. Three years later, he joined the 152nd Battalion of the National Guard. In 1871, he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel, where he studied for five years alongside Jean-Louis Forain, Fernand Cormon, and Eugène Damas. He also apprenticed with the orientalist painter Eugène Fromentin. Early Career Gervex debuted at the 1873 Salon by exhibiting A Sleeping Bather. The following year, he earned a second-class medal for Satyr Playing with a Maenad, a nude influenced by Cabanel's style, which was purchased by the state for the Luxembourg Museum. In 1876, he met Édouard Manet and associated with Impressionist painters, lightening his palette under their influence. The Scandal of Rolla In 1878, Gervex caused a scandal with Rolla, considered his masterpiece. Inspired by a poem by Alfred de Musset, the painting was rejected by the Salon jury for reasons similar to Manet's Olympia: its depiction of a prosaic nude in a contemporary setting was deemed immoral. The painting was exhibited at a gallery on Rue de la Chaussée-d'Antin, where it drew large crowds. Shortly before his death in 1929, Gervex saw the work accepted into the Luxembourg Museum. He also painted the portrait of Mlle Valtesse de La Bigne, a courtesan who inspired Émile Zola’s Nana. Gervex himself was one of the models for the character Fagerolles, an opportunistic and worldly painter in Zola’s novel L’Œuvre (1886). In the 1880s, Gervex traveled to Spain and England, collaborated on artistic projects, and was named a knight of the Order of Leopold of Belgium. In 1884, he established a new studio on Rue de la Chaussée-d'Antin and co-founded a painting academy with Ferdinand Humbert. Recognition as an Artist In 1889, Gervex was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor. He received numerous honors in the following years, including knighthoods in Norway and Sweden, and the Order of Charles III of Spain. In 1893, he married Henriette Fauche, and they had a daughter, Colette. By the 1890s, he was vice-president of the Société nationale des beaux-arts and decorated the Sorbonne’s physics hall in Paris. In 1896, Gervex was appointed Commander of the Order of Saint Anne in Russia and painted The Coronation of Nicholas II for the 1900 Universal Exposition. He also contributed to the decoration of the Train Bleu restaurant in Paris. Later Career and Contributions Gervex frequently visited Deauville and Trouville, hosting Marcel Proust at the Villa Les Frémonts. During World War I, too old for military service, he created patriotic works illustrating wartime life. Notable paintings included An Ambulance at Poitiers and The Blessing of the Pope, which depicted Russian soldiers being blessed in a trench. In 1918, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre for his services to the nation. In 1925, he was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy of Science, Letters, and Fine Arts of Belgium. By then, he owned a townhouse near Parc Monceau in Paris, often featured in his paintings. Henri Gervex died in Paris on June 6, 1929, and was buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery. In 1932, Rue Gervex in the 17th arrondissement was named in his honor. Public Collections Gervex’s works are held in numerous prestigious institutions, including the Musée d'Orsay (Satyr Playing with a Bacchante, 1874), the Detroit Institute of Arts (Scene in a Café, 1877), and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. His oeuvre includes portraits, allegories, and depictions of historical events, showcasing his versatile artistry and ability to capture both contemporary life and historical grandeur.
