The Lantern
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 13.5 inches x 9.75 inches
Size including frame: 20.25 inches x 16.5 inches
A wonderful portrait of a boy holding an oil lantern by Charles Spencelayh. A boy is shown carefully examining a lantern in a darkened room with the light facing towards him. The lantern with its distinctive fluted top, bulls eye lens and side handle appears to be a ‘dark lantern’. These lamps were designed to hide the light as and when needed. They were standard for the police, military and watchmen, but were also used on ships. Spencelayh has used ‘Chiaroscuro’, the strong contrast between light and dark, to great effect here in creating the illusion of three-dimensional volume. His technique also allows us to see the boy’s fascination with the lamp.
Charles Spencelayh was born on 27 October 1865 in Rochester, Kent. He studied at the national Art Training School in Kensington and later in Paris. He exhibited at the Paris Salon and at the Royal Academy from 1892 and was a founder member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters where he also exhibited. In addition to the London galleries, he exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham where he was elected an honorary member, the Royal Cambrian Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, the Walker Gallery, Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery.
From early on, he began painting highly detailed genre scenes which then developed into intimate studies of everyday folk usually in their home. His paintings usually feature a solitary figure engaged in an activity that most people would identify with. The almost photographic quality of his paintings allows the sitters personality to shine through and we are given a glimpse into their nature and how they deal with the situation they find themselves in.
Spencelayh’s ability to encapsulate a sentiment through painting made him a highly successful artist during his lifetime, winning him many accolades including the Royal Academy Picture of the Year in 1939. He also enjoyed the patronage of many public figures including Queen Mary who was an early collector of his work. His son Vernon also became a successful artist.
Many of his paintings are held in public collections including Birmingham Museum, Cowper and Newton Museum, Ferens Art Gallery, Grundy Art Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery, Rochester Guildhall Museum, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery, The Tate and the Towneley Hall Art Gallery.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

A Bouquet of Flowers & A Fine Vintage
Oil on canvas, pair, both signed
Image size: 12 inches x 9.75 inches (each)
Size including frame: 16.75 inches x 14.5 inches (each)
A delightful pair of three quarter length portraits of Italian women by Federico Andreotti. The first work shows a young woman in fine clothing with a basket of flowers in her hands. The second painting depicts a traditionally dressed woman holding a Chianti Fiasco and other wine bottles.
Federico or Federigo Andreotti was a genre and figure painter born in Florence on 6 March, 1847. He showed artistic talent from an early age and at 9 years old began receiving art lessons from the miniature painter Angiolo Tricca (1817-1884). At the age of 17, he attended the Art Academy in Florence where he studied under Enrico Pollastrini (1817-1876), the President of the Academy. Whilst there he won a competition and made a name for himself by producing amusing genre scenes and costume studies. His success attracted the patronage of wealthy and notable clients including the King of Italy who commissioned him to paint a large historical painting of Savonarola. As well as working as an artist, he also taught art at the Florentine Academy where he was made Professor in 1879.
During the same year, he began exhibiting abroad and made his debut at the Royal Academy in London, where he continued to show his works until 1883. He is believed to have spent time in England around this period where he also exhibited at other galleries including the Royal Manchester Institution, United Galleries, Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas Richardson & co.
He spent most of his life in Florence where he died on 30 October, 1930. His painting of Savonarola is held by the Italian government. Other examples of his work can be found in a number of UK public art collections including the Blackburn Museum, Fylde Town Hall, Glasgow Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery and Towneley Hall Art Museum.
Presentation: The paintings are housed in new, English made gilt frames which are in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, these works are offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Une Bonne Tasse de Thé
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 23 inches x 13.75 inches
Size including frame: 35 inches x 25.75 inches
A lovely portrait of a young woman pouring a cup of tea, by Pierre Louis Bouchard. The woman is depicted wearing a green striped dress with a white apron, whilst on her head is a mob cap decorated with a red ribbon. She is shown standing before a table containing a porcelain tea service on a silver salver. She is painted with her head turned towards the viewer as she expertly pours the tea into a cup. The mode appears similar to others figures the artist painted and could well have been the same person.
Pierre Louis Bouchard was born Pierre-François Bouchard in Lyon on 2 May 1831 to Pierre Bouchard and Amelie Baron. In 1845, he began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he was taught by Jean-Claude Bonnefond (1796-1860). He then moved to Paris where he became a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) at the Ecole des beaux Arts. He also studied under Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin...

19th century French, Surrender of the French at Huningen Fort to the Austrians
Located in Woodbury, CT
Wonderful French period copy of the famous painting by Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille, which the original is now in a museum in Paris.
This piece came from a private collection in New Jersey where it had been since it was purchased in France back in the 1950s. The previous owner was an Art dealer in NYC during the 1950s-70s and she kept some of her favorite paintings, this being one of them.
The piece was re-framed in the 1990s
In 35 years of dealing in paintings, I have never seen another example of this scene, it is very rare.!
History of the scene:
In the Siege of Hüningen (27 November 1796 – 1 February 1797), the Austrians captured the city from the French. Hüningen is in the present-day Department of Haut-Rhin, France. Its fortress lay approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km) north of the Swiss city of Basel and .5 miles (0.80 km) north of the spot where the present-day borders of Germany, France, and Switzerland meet. During the time of this siege, the village was part of the Canton of Basel City and the fortress lay in an area contested between the German states and the First French Republic.
The siege occurred within the French Revolutionary Wars during which Revolutionary France ranged...
