Jehan Georges Vibert, known as Jean-Georges Vibert (1840-1902) Portrait of a man, 1865, oil on canvas signed and dated on the right border. With a circular view , diameter 37.5 cm in a modern frame : 52.5 x 54.5 cm This beautiful portrait could be a self-portrait of the young painter - he was 25 years old at the time - because it bears a clear resemblance to a self-portrait of the artist drawn in 1858. The insistence of the gaze that catches our eye is another clue in favour of this hypothesis. In any case, it is a fine example of a romantic portrait, and the model's untidy hair indicates that this is a young artist who is breaking free from the norms. Vibert's works are particularly present in American museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Morgan Livbrary Museum in New York or the Haggin Museum in Stockton, California. On the website of this museum there is a nice presentation of the works of the artist with this mention: Jehan-Georges Vibert was famous as a painter, a writer, and a man who loved life. The painter entertained everyone who was anyone in Paris with “fantastic entertainments” in his home and studio. Vibert afforded this gracious living through the success of his art, which was popular in both France and with American collectors. Jehan Georges Vibert, known as Jean-Georges Vibert, born on 30 September 1840 in Paris and died on 26 July 1902 in Paris , was a French painter and playwright. Jean-Georges Vibert was the son of Louise-Georgina Jazet and the print publisher Théodore Vibert, partner of Adolphe Goupil, founder of Goupil & Cie. He is the grandson of the rose gardener Jean-Pierre Vibert (1777-1866). He began an artistic apprenticeship with his maternal grandfather, the engraver Jean-Pierre-Marie Jazet. More interested in painting than engraving, he entered the studio of Félix-Joseph Barrias, then was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 18572. He stayed there for six years in the studio of François-Édouard Picot. Vibert began to exhibit in 1863 at the Paris Salon with two works, La Sieste and Repentir, but this first experience was a relative failure. He met with success in the following years and won a medal at the 1864 Salon for Narcissus changed into a Flower, the year in which he married Louise Dietrich (born in 1843), from whom he was to divorce on 1 July 1886. He won a medal at the 1867 and 1868 Salons and a third class medal at the 1878 Universal Exhibition with several watercolours, including La Cigale et la Fourmi, which was noted by the New York Times. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Vibert enlisted in the tirailleurs de la Seine. He was wounded at the battle of Buzenval in October 1870, a wound that earned him the Legion of Honour. In 1882, he was promoted to the rank of officer of the same order. In 1886, he was a member of the jury in the watercolour and pastel section of the second International Black and White Exhibition in Paris with Gustave Boulanger and Émile Lévy. On 8 September 1887, he married the actress Marie-Émilie Jolly, known as Mademoiselle Lloyd or Marie-Émilie Lloyd (1842-1897), and on 21 October 1897, he married Marie Sanlaville (1847-1930), the first dancer at the Paris Opera and mother of the dramatic artist and diction teacher Marguerite-Marie Sanlaville (1869-1912). Vibert presented his works at the Salon until 1899. He sent anecdotal genre scenes. His paintings - with a deliberately ironic tone - depicting cardinals in familiar situations, with the vermilion stain on the cassock of his models attracting particular attention, earned him great success, as this theme was then in fashion. The popularity of his work reached the United States, where he sold his works at high prices, notably to John Jacob Astor IV and William Kissam Vanderbilt. A large group of Vibert's paintings was collected by Mary Louise Maytag, heir of Elmer Henry Maytag, on behalf of the Bishop of Miami Coleman Carroll, who greatly appreciated them despite their anti-clerical overtones. The collection was donated to St. John Vianney College Seminary in Florida. Jean-Georges Vibert is buried in Paris in the Père-Lachaise cemetery. His pupils include the painter Ferdinand Roybet
