John White Alexander
Portrait of Mercer Beasley

About the Item

Provenance: Private Collection, Newton, Connecticut H. V. Allison & Co. This painting has been seen by Mary Ann Goley and is in her records. Signed Center Right Canvas size inside frame is 49.25 x 39.5 inches Mercer Beasley (1815-1897) presided as Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1864 to 1897. The documentation of his portrait appears in the John White Alexander papers in the archives at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. As early as 1884 Alexander precisely explained what he wished to attain with his portrait painting, “…I hope to have a picture…a subject and not a simple portrait…It is very simple-only one figure but in it I want to express a sentiment.” Alexander is extremely adept at capturing the personality of the sitter. In our example Alexander places the sitter with legs crossed at the very front of the canvas in a thoughtful, somewhat challenging pose. Judge Beasley engages the viewer directly, almost confronting and occupying the space of this same viewer in much the same way a lawyer or a judge would address his court. Our portrait then is more than just a physical likeness of the sitter; it is a reflection of the very essence of the sitter. In a time of Symbolism and Art Nouveau styles of painting Alexander has created an elongated somewhat twisted figure that expresses the sentiment of the sitter against a backdrop of atmospheric grays and blacks that are reminiscent of the colors of James Abbott Mc Neill Whistler. In 1881 after a time spent in Europe traveling with fellow painters Frank Duveneck and William Merritt Chase, John White Alexander returned to New York and achieved great success in the art of portraiture. He painted the likenesses of such luminaries as Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Burroughs, Walt Whitman, Henry G. Marquand, R.A.L. Stevenson and State Supreme Court Justice Mercer Beasley. Alexander had been schooled in the art of portraiture while working for Harper’s Magazine and Century Magazine for which he submitted portraits of prominent Europeans. John White Alexander was born in Allegheny, PA. on 7 Oct 1856; he died in New York on 31 May 1915). He was known as an American painter and illustrator. He began his career in New York in 1875 as a political cartoonist and illustrator for Harper’s Weekly. In 1877 he went to Paris for his first formal art training, and then to Munich, where he enrolled at the Kunstakademie under Gyuala Benczúr. In 1878 he joined a colony of American painters established by Frank Duveneck in Polling, Bavaria. In 1879 they traveled to Italy, where Alexander formed friendships with James McNeill Whistler and Henry James. In 1881 he returned to New York, working as an illustrator for Harper’s, as a drawing instructor at Princeton and as a highly successful society portrait painter. He also exhibited at the National Academy of Design. By 1893 his reputation in both Europe and America had soared, and in 1895 he was awarded a prestigious commission for a series of murals entitled the Evolution of the Book in the newly established Library of Congress in Washington, DC. After 1901 Alexander became deeply involved with the promotion of the arts in America. He won numerous mural commissions (e.g. Pittsburgh, PA, Carnegie Inst.; from 1905, unfinished) and continued to paint portraits. Condition: relined and probably due to a tear in the lower quadrant. There are some retouchings and fill to the tear which is in his mid section between the two hands. Above this area is a larger than quarter size retouch which might have been flaking. The rest of the canvas is fairly clean of restoration. Canvas reads perfectly to the viewer and is ready to hang.

Woman, Yellow Shawl and Fan
Located in Greenwich, CT
An impressive and masterful depiction of a young woman with a fan. An American artist who studied and traveled in Europe and painted this painting before his return. It has its original frame which is magnificent. The frame has been regilded in th past 10 years. Vinton was abroad in the 1880s. The sitter gazes coyly over her fan in a gesture that ladies and gentleman of fin-de-siècle Europe would have understood to mean “wait for me,” and perhaps indicating her interest in a potential suitor. Vinton embarked on several trips to Europe—to Spain in 1882 with William Merritt Chase and Robert Blum, and to several different countries in 1888 following his marriage—which provided inspiration for a renewed style and subject matter. While in Spain with Chase and Blum, the three artists visited Madrid and Toledo; there, Vinton studied the masterfully tenebrous portraits of Velázquez, an influence that can be seen in Portrait with Yellow Shawl...
