About the Item

A fine watercolor portrait of a girl with a red wide brim hat and dress by American artist Lee Lufkin Kaula (1865-1957). Kaula was born in Erie, PA and studied with Charles Melville Dewey in New York and Edmond Aman-Jean at the Academie Colarossi in Paris. She met fellow artist and her future husband, William Jurian Kaula, in France. They eventually shared studio space at Fenway Studios in Boston, painting together, and summering near New Ipswich, New Hampshire. She was a member of several Boston art associations including the Copley Society, the Guild of Boston Artists and the Boston Society of Watercolorists. She became well known for her impressionist and luminous landscapes and village scenes. Watercolor on paper, signed lower left, titled on verso Fenway Studios label “Girl In Red,” and housed under glass in a giltwood Stanford White style frame.
