About the Item
'Portrait of Renée', oil on board, by Louis Latapie (1941). When combined with the artist's passionate brush strokes, the wood panel upon which this piece is painted, creates both a visual and textural artwork that is stunning. The application of impasto technique adds further richness to the piece. Research of the artist's life suggests this portrait is of his second wife, Renée Maurisse, to whom he was married in 1927. This sympathetic portrait suggests the artist's deep love for his spouse. She died in 1971 while they were preparing for his exhibition in the Palace of the Popes for the 25th Festival of Avignon. The artist died the following year. The piece has been newly framed in a tray and recently undergone a cleaning by an art restoration professional. The artist signed the work in the lower right hand. The date and title is listed on the reverse of the artwork now covered by the new backing. Provenance: The previous owner of the painting acquired it directly from the artist's atelier in France.
About the Artist: Louis Latapie (1891-1972) was a highly celebrated artist who enjoyed an international reputation which continues today. During his long career he exhibited regularly at the major Paris Salons, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. He had numerous individual and group exhibitions including Art et Résistance Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris in 1946. On his death in 1972, he was honoured, like Braque and Picasso, with a major retrospective at the Palais des Papes in Avignon. Further comprehensive retrospectives of his work were held in 1988 at the Musée Rapin and the Musée des Augustins. Appearing in numerous exhibitions and sold in the major auction houses, his works can be found today in the collections of museums worldwide including the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, (Paris); Musée d’Art Moderne, (Paris); Musée d’Art Moderne (Geneva); and the city museums of Toulouse, Avignon and Poitiers.

Louis Latapie
Louis Latapie was a French painter, known mostly for his Cubist compositions and still life and nude paintings. Born Louis Robert Arthur Latapie, he showed interest in art as a boy and luckily for him, his family moved to Paris in 1900. Latapie’s earliest training was under Jean-Paul Laurens and enrolled in the Julien Academy in 1911. That same year, Latapie also took courses at the Ranson Academie, where he discovered Cubism under the supervision of Paul Serusier. World War I put a temporary damper on Latapie’s career, when he was stationed in Albi and later mobilized in 1914. The war took a great toll on Latapie because he was wounded three times and also lost one of his brothers in the war. By 1920, Latapie was able to again devote himself to art and also became a professor at the Ranson Academy. Latapie was finally able to expose his work in 1922, including several well-received one-man shows at the Galerie Druet. However, Latapie was set back again when his wife mysteriously disappeared that same year. As a result, Latapie moved to Toulon in 1925 and met fellow artist Juan Gris. In 1927, Latapie remarried and moved to Paris and spent the next few years teaching and living between Toulon and Paris. During this time, Latapie continued to paint in a Cubist style. Latapie served in the war again briefly during World War II in 1939 and in the mid-1940s he bought a workshop in Seine-Port. During this time, Latapie would exhibit along Desnoyer, Fautrier and others and became associated with the School of Paris. Latapie also began to create designs for tapestries in the early 1950s and shortly afterwards, his work began to sway towards Abstraction. Towards the end of his career, Latapie was commissioned to create murals and mosaics for public buildings. Throughout his career, his styles and techniques changed often, and he sometimes signed his work “Latapie” in cursive on the front of his canvas. Latapie continued to work himself until his mysterious disappearance in 1972, which is the assumed date of his death. Today his work is housed all over Europe and perhaps in your own home.

'Parc des Buttes-Chaumont' in Paris, gouache on art paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). A charming depiction of well turned out Parisians enjoying a day at the park. Boaters, strollers and swans all co-mingle around the peaceful lake. The reflection of the rocky bluff in the water is superbly treated by Génin. It's a cheerful and uplifting image of days-gone-by in 1930s Paris.
The park takes its name from the 'bare hill' (chauve-mont) that once occupied the site. It became a place where gypsum was mined, and where the limestone was quarried to be used in buildings in Paris and the United States. Worse, though, it was a site that also became a dumping ground. Luckily, during the 19th-century renovation of Paris under Napoleon III, chauve-mont was chosen as a place for a large park, as part of the emperor's fascination with endowing Paris with green spaces.
The artificial lake created at that time wraps around a hilly central island. The lake attracts waterfowl and other birds and is stocked with fish. The 19th-century planners cleaned up the site and added tons of soil to fill the pits left by a limestone mining operation. Then dynamite was used to "sculpt" the site into the craggy shapes seen today, including the 50-metre-high central hill with cliffs, an interior grotto, pinnacles, and arches. Up on top, overlooking the rest of the park - and depicted in this artwork - is a small, round belvedere, based on the Roman Temple of Vesta in Italy. From that spot you can see a lovely view of Montmartre and the white cupolas of the Sacre-Coeur. The painting is in very good condition. It has been newly framed and glazed with museum-quality glass (anti-reflective and UV protection) to preserve this significant artwork for decades to come.
