A French painter of Belgian origin, Lucien Mathelin was born into a family of artists in 1905. Self-taught, he had no academic training and exhibited his first canvas at the Salon d'Automne in 1924. He enriched his palette with trips to Morocco in 1925-26 and Greece in the 1930s.
In 1937, Lucien Mathelin worked for Raoul Dufy on the monumental work La Fée Electricité (The Electricity Fairy), designed for the Exposition Universelle and now housed in the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. In 1940, he moved to a studio in Montmartre and lived between Paris and Provence.
A free-spirited, facetious artist, he tackled both serious and lighter subjects. A great master of misappropriation, he often treated these in trompe-l'oeil, in a surrealist vein tinged with irony, although he always kept to the bangs of this movement. His taste for provocation and protest is exemplified by his Monumensonges. Two paintings from this series, exhibited at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1917, caused a scandal and were removed. They were deemed irreverent and an attack on the Head of State and the Unknown Soldier.
His caustic compositions are executed in harmonious chromatic ranges and demonstrate a fine technical mastery, as in the self-portrait we present here, a youthful work by the artist painted at the age of twenty.
