Signature : bottom left The German painter Rolf Dieter Meyer–Wiegand was a modest man, personally and artistically. He was born in an artistic family where music played a particularly important role. Meyer-Wiegand developed a passion for the art of painting. But he was not a person who would come forward with his work. He was rather put off by the harshness of the world of art dealers and he chose to live a solitary artist’s life. His wife Marianne was his help and stay, his Muse and a tower of strength for him. Meyer-Wiegand’s oeuvre best fits in with the Düsseldorfer Schule. His immediate surroundings were his subjects. No great intrinsic or epic themes, but the life and the scenery that was familiar to him from his own personal experience. His paintings were often scenes taken from his immediate surroundings: the scenery along the Rhine, rural life, and sometimes city- scenes or views of the harbour, all of them with a touch of nostalgia. This same nostalgia can be found in the numerous portraits he painted of his wife. They are usually set in a turn-of-the-century atmosphere, a very inspirational period for Meyer-Wiegand, in particular because of the great examples in the French Art of Painting. The many scenes taken from the German horse races are suffused with the turn-of-the-century atmosphere. Although he often travelled through Europe and many of his landscapes originated in The Netherlands, the painter remained true to his distinguished style without losing himself in the “mismodernisms” of an artistic world he felt no kinship with. It is typical of Meyer-Wiegand’s modesty that he had a preference for working on very small panels. The greater part of his oeuvre is done on small- sized panels. They are subtle reflections of what he witnessed and of the emotions he experienced when painting. Delicacy and elegance, the purity of nature, the energy of towns and industry, Rolf Dieter Meyer-Wiegand knew how to capture them in small-sized frames.
