Natasha Lelenco
LGBTQ+ Migrant Statement Portrait in Red Tones. Currency #220, Circular Painting

2024

About the Item

This circular portrait painting by Natasha Lelenco belongs to the Currencies series and centers on themes of gender identity, migration, and queer resilience. Rendered in striking crimson tones against a copper-brown backdrop, the figure’s profile emerges with clarity and confidence. The Spanish inscription that frames the portrait reads: "Poder ser yo sin tapujos", which translates into English as "To be myself without concealment." The piece was inspired by the testimony of a migrant who fled their country due to repression related to their sexual orientation. Unlike narratives of economic migration, this statement foregrounds the urgency of fleeing to preserve one’s right to live authentically. The work echoes the spirit of Pride Month by affirming the role of migration as an act of self-liberation and visibility. It functions as both portrait and manifesto — a symbolic coin that claims space for queer identity beyond borders and shame. About the Series The Currencies series transforms portraits into symbolic monetary units that interrogate systems of value and identity. Each painting features a circular format, inscribed with phrases in the sitter’s language that reflect personal histories of displacement, otherness, and social inequality. The inscriptions work as socio-poetic statements, asserting presence in a world that often renders marginalized identities invisible. Two conceptual layers define the series: first, the slight variations in price between works highlight the arbitrary nature of assigned value based on ethnicity, origin, or condition. Second, each piece acts as a future exchangeable unit. Collectors may redeem the nominal value of the work for a new piece by the artist at her studio in Galicia, positioning the artwork as a literal and symbolic form of alternative currency. Installation and Custom Projects Each piece is produced on a treated pine wood circle, 26 cm in diameter and 2 cm thick. Works are intended to function autonomously or as part of larger, modular configurations. Casa das Peritas accepts exclusive commissions for multi-panel installations tailored to architectural spaces or thematic needs. Please contact us for personalized proposals. "Ben-day Sophia 1" Mixed media, Acrylic, spray paint, pigmented ink 36x28 canvas
By Ceravolo
Located in Southampton, NY
"Benday Sophia 1" pays tribute to those paintings that became the trademark of Ceravolo's unique and trend setting style of painting. His work is collected worldwide and is in many important collections including, Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart, Hugh Hefner and Prince Jefri of Brunei to name only a few. In addition to those, his paintings came to popular attention when he was commissioned to create 5 large scale paintings for the lobby of The Palladium Theatre in New York City. In this painting, Ceravolo has featured an image of his pop art painting of Sophia Loren, and combined it with a pattern of benday dots to create the basis of "Benday Sophia 1". He then paints his trademark brush strokes and textures on the canvas over the pop art portrait. Then, he paints the "floating" illusion that creates the 3d floating effect he is known for. The Canvas measures 36x28".
