About the Item
A fine full length portrait of Janet Thurston Newbold by Russian American artist Ossip Perelma (1876-1949). Perelma was born in Odessa, Russia, studied at the Imperial Academy in Petrograd and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. After immigrating to San Francisco in 1915, he became a protégé of Senator James D. Phelan and active in the local art scene. With Phelan's contacts, he soon was well-known for his portraits of Woodrow Wilson and other famous people. By 1932 he had moved to San Clemente, CA. His exhibitions include Paris Salon, 1909; Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, 1919; Exhibition Park, Los Angeles, 1919; Ainslie Gallery, Los Angeles, 1927; Gumps, San Francisco, 1927; DeYoung Museum, 1927; NMAA, Washington DC.
Janet Thurston Newbold (1867-1942), was the wife of Noyes Brett Frank, President of the Washington Star & founder of the Associated Press.
