From there he then went onto the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich where he studied under the genre painter Ludwig von Hagn (1820-1898). By 1858, he had made his way to Düsseldorf where he became a member of the artists' association, ‘Malkasten’ and sat on its Board of Directors for many years.
