Pat Hobaugh
Pat Hobaugh grew up on a small farm in rural Indiana. He never took an art class or touched a paintbrush until his senior year in college when he took an Art History course that changed his life. He fell in love with the Old Masters and started to teach himself to paint. After several years of self-education, he went back to school to earn a Bachelors and Masters in painting from the Uni- versity of Iowa and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively. Now he is represented in galleries across the country and has work in collections around the world. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Pat Hobaugh works in a style that reflects the examination of pop culture fused with the tradition of Dutch still life painting. His fascination with objects (action figures, toys, miscellaneous foods) comes from his anthropological mindset that questions what these objects say about us as a cul- ture. Having dubbed his particular practice of painting our pop culture icons in object form “Stuf- fology,” Hobaugh explores the significance of materiality and “playtime” in the modern world and infuses it with matured satirical wit and a childlike playfulness. Hobaugh also considers the effects from one generation to the next in his paintings, since he uses icons that may be removed from the current pop culture context. In doing this, he alludes to a shift in understanding of young and old. These objects are still toys, a tribute to our youth, though they might not be considered “current.” Though the acknowledgement of lost youth can be overwhelm- ing, Hobaugh conveys gratitude and hopefulness of his youth and of today’s youth by mixing the pop culture figures. Hobaugh says of his works, “My still life work is a quest in exploring and exploding the traditional idea of the representational still life. These paintings began as an examination of the cultural indoc- trination and development of early adolescent children via toy action figures... Overall, they serve as a window into the world where a child’s mythos of heroes and villains are formed. Recently, the still lifes have expanded to include an examination and comparison of themes from past and pres- ent popular culture, such as sugary snacks and breakfast cereals.”

Steven Alan Kaufman Or Steve Kaufman, 1960–2010 American pop artist, filmmaker, photographer and humanitarian.In 1975, Kaufman participated in a group graffiti Street Art show at the prestigious Whitney Museum of American Art.Kaufman participated with nine other New York City students in a cultural art exchange with students in Japan, resulting in his attaining a scholarship to the Parsons School of Design. As a teenager Kaufman was going to Studio 54 and associating with people from the 1970s New York City art community. Kaufman attended Manhattan's School of Visual Arts (SVA), where he met contemporary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat. In 1981 Kaufman met Andy Warhol, who became a significant influence on the 19-year-old Kaufman, who worked as Warhohl's assistant at his studio, The Factory, producing original paintings and silkscreens. Kaufman designed theme parties for various nightclubs, sold his paintings to Calvin Klein and Steve Rubell, and participated in a group art show with pop artist Keith Haring, whom he had met at the SVA. Kaufman created the graphics for NBC's Saturday Night Live. Kaufman graduated from SVA with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and held art shows in London. Leaving Warhol's Factory, Kaufman established his own SAK Studio, hiring homeless New Yorkers to assist him. He painted portraits of three homeless persons for Transportation Display, Inc. that where later shown in 46 cities on bus billboards, helping to raise $4.72 million to benefit the homeless. Kaufman crated the first “Racial Harmony” mural in Harlem to raise attention of inner-city problems. He showed at the White Gallery as a tribute to those who died from AIDS. The “Say Without Art” tribute was based on this show. Kaufman also exhibited his works at the Loft Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.In 1993, Kaufman moved his studio to Los Angeles and began painting in a new style he called 'comic book pop art'. He used images of Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and others from both DC comics and Marvel comics. To assist him in his studio, Kaufman hired more than 100 ex-gang members released from prison.In 1995 Kaufman published works for Martin Lawrence Limited Editions, hand-embellishing works including limited editions of Beethoven and Marilyn Monroe. The medium of choice for Do Byung-Kyu, born in Cheonan, Korea, is dolls: they are both his conceptions and his physical expression. At the same time dolls are also the perfect tool for communicating the artist’s inner self. Expressing himself by means of dolls liberates Do from the restrictions of the mundane world. By embodying in the form of dolls his actions and thoughts, dreams and desires, and even the instincts lying in the depths of the subconscious, he transcends the secular boundaries. Dolls are his alter ego, his other self that he can construct precisely the way he wants. Sublimating the experiences and memories from his youth into various subjects of desire, Do uses dolls to paint a descriptive picture of the ambiguous feelings of contradictions from his childhood when he would abuse and kill a plaything, for example a frog, then bury the body in solemn mourning over its death. These sexual or violent games from his childhood are not likely to be limited to Do’s experiences alone. Most of us can vaguely remember indulging in sadistic acts of sexual love against a doll. Rising above a child’s simple curiosity, it is an intuitive game of the senses we play by ourselves. In a number of Do’s paintings, sticky liquid can be observed dripping down a doll’s face. This brings back recollections of the life inside our mothers’ womb where we were also enveloped by mucous waters, like the amniotic fluid. It refuses contact with the anything, and nothing wants to touch it either. The shape of such a mucous liquid is a protective layer sheltering the intrinsic identity and desires of man.
