Ground Floor Gallery is thrilled to present artist Ronald Hall's newest oil portrait, "Portrait of A Boy" exclusively available here on our 1st Dibs storefront. In March 2019, the gallery presented Hall's first solo show in New York City which included a selection of the artist's personality-infused portraits and textured landscapes. In Hall's words: "This painting is a part of an ongoing series that relates to my long time fascination with 18th century African-American daguerreotypes. The images are usually of black people who are unknown, or whose story may no longer be considered relevant. My interest lies in the idea of creating or imagining a story or tale around the lives of the people in the photographs, by recreating these images in the form of contemporary paintings in full color with the hope of somehow bringing them into contemporary relevance." Hall's paintings are a kaleidoscopic fusion of urban energy, figurative and narrative by nature. Growing up amidst the crime ridden neighborhoods of Pittsburgh led him to see art as both an informative and educational teaching tool. Born out of stories of fictional and or non-fictional perspectives of an African-American artist, his paintings attempt to challenge the viewers interpretation of what contemporary black art is. Ronald Hall's work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and art museums internationally and throughout the US. A 2016 Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture alumnus, Hall also studied Illustration at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Most recently, Hall was selected as one of the The 2018 Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed grant recipients. In addition to a group exhibition at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in 2019, recipients were recognized for their talent as well as their ability to greatly benefit from the grant.
