About the Item
Miss Ada Gossett, circa 1673, half-length in a landscape at dusk, wearing an amber silk gown adorned with a gold trimmed gauze shawl and fine jewels, wearing a pearl necklace, her fair hair worn down in the fashionable curled ringlet style of the period.
The portrait has been confirmed as being by Lely on first hand inspection by UK experts Diana Dethloff and Catherine Macleod.
The Gossett family were French Huguenots originaly from Normandy who moved to Bagot Manor, St Saviour in Jersey in 1685 to escape persecution. Although little is known about the sitter, artists such as Peter Lely and Allan Ramsay used a court frame maker named Isaac Gossett (1713-1799) to frame their portraits and it is likely that Ada might have been related to Isaac Gossett in some way, placing her in Lely's circle of acquaintances and associates.
Peter Lely, a Baroque portrait painter of Dutch origin, was born as Pieter van der Faes in Westphalia, Germany. Renowned for his evocative portrayals of the mid-17th-century English aristocracy, his work was significantly influenced by the styles of Anthony van Dyck.
His formal art education took place in Haarlem, where he is believed to have been apprentice to Pieter de Grebber, a painter and embroiderer. His skills were recognised early in his career when he became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1637.
Lely's artistic career predominantly unfolded in England, where he relocated around 1643. Initially, his repertoire included Biblical and mythological scenes; however, his profound legacy was cemented through portrait painting. Lely's remarkable talent captured the attention of the court, making him the premier portraitist for Charles I. Remarkably, his career seamlessly transitioned through the tumultuous periods of the English Civil War, serving both Oliver Cromwell and Richard Cromwell.
With the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Charles II appointed Lely as the Principal Painter in Ordinary, a prestigious role that further solidified his influence in English art. In 1661, Lely became a naturalised British subject and was knighted in 1679, reflecting both his contribution to the arts and his integration into British society. His studio, known for its prolific output, was in constant demand, marking him as the preeminent painter in England.
Lely's work during the Commonwealth era (1649-1660) took on a more severe and puritanical tone. Conversely, his Restoration portraits, particularly of women, are celebrated for their subtle colouring and the sensuous languor they evoke. His series The Windsor Beauties, portraying court ladies of the 1660s, exemplifies his ability to blend skilful rendering of textiles with an intimate portrayal of his subjects.
His portrait of Miss Ada Gossett serves as a prime example of Lely's mastery in capturing the essence of his patrons. The depicted sense of intimacy, combined with the luxurious detailing of pearls and brocade, illustrates the subject's status and personality with elegance and subtlety.
Beyond his painting, Lely was a noted connoisseur of art, amassing an impressive collection of Old Master drawings. His collection was sold posthumously, further testament to his enduring influence and refined taste in art.

Sir Peter Lely
Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) was born in Germany at Soest in Westphalia in 1618. Though his family name was van der Faes, he assumed the name Lely after the lily that was carved on the gable of his father’s home in The Hague. He moved to England in 1641, the year that Van Dyck died, and succeeded Van Dyck. He was court painter to Kind Charles I and King Charles II. By working for many of the patrons of the late van Dyck, Lely rapidly established himself as one of the country’s most important portrait painters.

18th century English portrait of a lady beside an urn, with a basket of flowers

Portrait of a lady wearing a white gown with a red cloak, pearls in her hair and draped over one shoullder, standing beside a classical urn with a basket of flowers, c.1765.
The portrait is believed to be a companion portrait of a John (1741-1816) or James (1751-1807) Durno which is housed in an identical frame. The sitter is possibly either the wife of John who was Janes Byres of Stonywood or John and James's sister Elizabeth. (James never married). The Durno family were based around the Aberdeen area of Scotland and John was an advocate in the area and then later a customs official in Jamaica. James was a successful timber merchant, spending time in the Baltic before being made His Majesty's Consul in Memel, Prussia.
The portrait is likely to have been painted before Tilly travelled to India in 1768, when John, Jane and Elizabeth would have been in their twenties.

James Thynne was the youngest son of Thomas Thynne, 1st Viscount Weymouth and Frances Finch of Longleat House, Wiltshire. He died in his youth and his Aunt, Anne Kingsmill Finch, Countess of Winchilsea (1661-1720), wrote a moving poem on his death. He was buried in the family vault at Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire. A mezzotint of this painting by William Faithorne the Younger is held in the Royal Collection.

Both sitters are portrayed wearing a silk “Japanese” coat. During the second half of the seventeenth the Japanese silk coat, an adapted Japanese kimono, became a real vogue in the Dutch elite. The exclusive Dutch trade contacts with Japan can explain the popularity of the kimono-style silk coats in the Netherlands. Everybody who could afford one, dressed in such a fashionable and comfortable coat and, like the present sitters, some proud owners had themselves portrayed in a “Japanese” coat often together with an oriental carpet to underline their standing and international connections. These portraits are the work of the Polish-born portraitist Christoffel Lubieniecki (also known as Lubienitski, Lubinitski or Lubiniecki)
Lubieniecki was first trained in Hamburg under Julian Stuhr and after 1675 in Amsterdam under Adriaen Backer and Gerard de Lairesse. He specialized in landscapes, generally of an Italianate character, and in portraits. The loving execution of these contented burghers, enjoying the garden vistas of their country house, places him alongside Amsterdam portraitists such as Constantijn Netscher and Michiel van Musscher...
