About the Item
This lovely portrait oil painting is by noted Suffolk artist Sydney Seymour Lucas. Painted circa 1957 the sitter is Sheila de Quincey, who stood as a prospective Liberal candidate in 1957. It is a half length portrait and she is wearing a vermillion dress and ivory shawl. There is some superb impasto and lovely brushwork making this an excellent example of his work.
Signed lower right.
Provenance. Suffolk estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 25 inches, in excellent condition.
Frame. In a stunning ornate Bourlet frame, 38 inches by 33 inches and in good condition.
Sydney Charles Seymour Lucas (1878-1954) Lucas was educated, as a boarder with James George Easton, vicar of St Margaret's Church, Ilkeshall St Margaret, Suffolk in 1891, and at Westminster School 1892-1895 and the Royal Academy Schools. He married at St Pancras, London in 1905, Mary Douglas Clark .It was about this time that the family added Seymour into their surname. A portrait painter & illustrator, he exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters; the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy 1909-1940, from Bushey, Hertfordshire in 1909, London 1934 and Blythburgh, Suffolk 1936. The Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich holds some of his paintings including an oil 'Suffolk Puches-Mares and Foals' which was loaned to the centenary exhibition of Ipswich Art Club in 1974.
