About the Item

Painting oil on panel depicting a strong and distinctive old man's head with dimensions of 36 x 28 cm without frame and 68 x 60 with frame coeval Flemish school of the second half of the 17th century. by Flemish painter Daniel Van den Dick ( Antwerp 1610 - Mantua 1670 ). In this depiction of this character portrayed for the particularity and depth of the face, quickly sketched with an accentuated formal conciseness and with a squarish physiognomy of the face, illuminated by an artificial light source that directly invests the protagonist, one can see a revisitation of a seventeenth-century figurative culture with a really important and remarkably tasteful aesthetic and interpretative 'angle. Moreover, the painting in such an abbreviated manner, seemingly almost hurried, but instead undergirded by a pressing rhythm is accentuated by a more thoughtful interpretive effort. Focusing then on the truly peculiar typologies both formal and physiognomic, combined with the analysis of the contrasting chromatic fabric traversed by squillant luministic flickers. The compositional scheme of this work faithfully reflects the precepts of the time with an 'almost frontal setting of the figure and with the light conceived in the strictest Caravaggesque tradition, with a light source coming from the left, which makes the noble head stand out against a dark background, shaded on the right in a lighter halo; here we can easily see the artist's inclination and desire to capture in the portrait the character and his attention to an emotional and sentimental rendering of the image through a painting, which exudes a deep humanity and great moral strength, without ever reaching a decorative formalism, endowed with both great naturalism and realism and a strong religious spirit and an intimate and sorrowful participation in a humanity marked by age and suffering. The paintings and works of art published here are my exclusive property and therefore are always available to be viewed, by appointment, in my exhibition sites located in Sanremo and Brescia. 18th Century by Giuseppe Antonio Petrini, Portrait of Saint Peter, Oil on canvas
Located in Milano, Lombardia
Giuseppe Antonio Petrini, (Carona, Italy, 1677 – 1757 ca.) Title: Portrait of Saint Peter Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: without frame 75.5 x 63 cm - with frame 96 x 83 x 5 cm Not signed Expertise by Professor Giancarlo Sestieri Provenance: Luigi Koeliker - Koetser Collection. Collection number 858 on verso. The apostle in half-length portrait, looking upwards. His shoulders are bare from his blue shirt, a brown cloak is draped over his arm. In his hand he holds the ‘keys to paradise’, which make him attributively recognisable. The bearded face shows the pleading remorse for his defamation of Christ described in the biblical account. The painting style immediately reveals Petrini's brushwork. The painter, who was born in Ticino, is one of the northern Italian-Lombard artists of the late Baroque period, who was possibly associated with Bartolomeo Guidobono (1654-1709) in Turin after 1700 and is documented with works in his home city between 1711 and 1753. Works by his hand were mainly found in the Como, Bergamo and Lugano areas. Other depictions of St Peter can be found in the church of Dubino and in a private collection in Montagnola. In 1991, an exhibition of his works was organised at the Villa Malpensata in Lugano, Switzerland. The painter was the son of a sculptor and, according to the sources, a pupil of the Genoese painter Bartolomeo Guidobono (1654-1709). However, he was also inspired by the works of Andrea Pozzo (1642-1709). Works by his hand can be found in several churches in Piedmont, such as San Maurizio in Pinerolo. At the end of the 1730s, a strong development towards the Rococo style can be recognised, as demonstrated by his ‘Allegories of the Seasons’ (Lugano Art...

19th Century Head of St. Peter Painting Oil on Canvas by Follower of Piazzetta
By Giovanni Battista Piazzetta
Located in Milan, IT
Follower of Giambattista Valentino Piazzetta (Venice, 1682 - there, 1754) Head of St. Peter Oil on canvas applied on cardboard, 36.5 x 34.5 cm With frame 42.5 x 41 cm The claves Regni Coelorum, an essential Petrine attribute, shyly peek out in this painting, with the sole purpose of allowing the character to be recognized. The wholeness of attention is indeed conveyed to the Saint, from aching humanity and divine inspiration. Pietro is rendered with a liquid epidermis, illuminated by a pearly light that slips and drips to define the overbearing nose, cheekbones and browbone; while the vitreous humor of the eye turns bright to the sky, to investigate the highest wills of the divine mystery. The portrait, rendered here in intense monochrome, denounces the direct dependence of the present artist on the suggestions of Giambattista (Valentino) Piazzetta, one of the greatest among the eighteenth-century Venetian masters. Following an immature apprenticeship in the field of wood carving with his father Jacopo, a sculptor from Pederobba, in the Treviso area, Piazzetta retired to the workshop of Antonio Molinari...
