Captivating religious triptych oil painting, dating to the early 1700's and of Italian authorship. This three sectioned oil painting tells the iconic story of Christ being born.
The first painting depicts the Annunciation with the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary. We then have the Nativity with Christ in the manger. The final painting within the set depicts Christ being circumised as a new born, as was the tradition.
The artistic depiction of the nativity has been an important subject for Christian artists since the 4th century. Since the 13th century, the nativity scene has emphasised the humility of Jesus and promoted a more tender image of him.
This fine, early and rare set of three paintings, framed as one, tells the story in such a beautiful manner, it truly is an exquisite piece of art.
Condition report:
The painting has quite a lot of age related scuffs, cracks and other tarnishes (including a small puncture to the canvas with the Annunciation). However, it is in a very pleasing state considering it's age. The frame also has a few scuffs but otherwise in a decent condition.
