About

LATE 17TH CENTURY PORTRAIT OF ROBERT SUTTON, 1ST BARON LEXINGTON (1594 – 1668) - BRITISH SCHOOL. Period Portraits are proud to present this large scale and a highly decorative portrait of Robert Sutton (1594-1668) Inscribed ‘Robert Sutton, Great Baron Lexington Of Avraham, 27th of Charles’. The sitter is pictured full-length hand on hip, brandishing the cloak of his magnificent crimson velvet peers robes. This rich ceremonial attire also includes a cape of ermine, white stocking and buff shoes with velvet bows. Beside him upon a table, is a baron’s coronet bearing six equally spaced silver balls (called pearls) around the rim. This portrait is in an excellent state of conservation and is presented ready to hang in an appropriate custom 17th-century style molded wooden frame with gilt highlights. Robert Sutton (1594 - 1668) Born in 1594 into a noble family, by 1624 Robert Sutton was elected Knight of the Shire (MP) for Nottinghamshire and further re-elected in April and November 1640. Robert served Charles I of England during the English Civil War, making great monetary sacrifices for the royal cause and was disabled as a Royalist from sitting in 1643. In 1645 the king created him Baron Lexington, this being a variant of the name of the Nottinghamshire village of Laxton. His estate suffered during the time of the Commonwealth, but some money was returned to him by Charles II of England. He commissioned the building of the first Kelham Hall. He died on 13 October 1668. There is a wall monument to him in Church of St. Michael and All Angels, Averham. Kelham Hall. Kelham Hall was originally the home of the Manners-Sutton family (a family connected to the Dukes of Rutland, the Marquess of Granby, and Viscount Canterbury) of Averham. The Kelham estate was first acquired by William Sutton from the Foljambe family. On 5 May 1647, King Charles I surrendered at the end of the English Civil War at nearby Southwell and was held at Kelham Hall for several days afterward. The Hall was upgraded by William's son Robert Sutton, 1st Baron Lexington after the Civil War. This first house was destroyed by fire in the reign of William and Mary.
