Il dipinto rimanda nei modi pittorici e nel soggetto alla produzione di Giacomo Francesco Cipper detto il Todeschini, artista di origini austriache ma affermatosi a Milano.
Egli fu uno specialista di scene di mercato, concertini all'aperto, giocatori di carte, scene di umile vita quotidiana realizzati con ridenti forzature caricaturali e una ricerca dell'effetto comico.
Come in quest' opera, che ritrae un popolano, intento a bere vino: nonostante la miseria che traspare dai suoi abiti, l'umo risulta allegro e ridanciano, forse per l'eccesso del bere, a rappresentare non la desolazione ma la vitalità e il divertimento della vita quotidiana, seppur misera.
Il dipinto è stato restaurato e ritelato e presenta, sul telaio al verso, un piccolo cartiglio con dettagli del restauro effettuato.
E' presentato in cornice antica riadattata.
