Motel Mistress

1952

About the Item

This illustration was published twice as a paperback cover, first as Motel Mistress by Norman Bligh, Original Books, 1952, and also - under the same title - as Star Novels #763, circa 1955. Raymond S. Pease was a painter and illustration artist, especially of outdoor sports, including polo, and of Western subjects. Born in Vermont, he grew up with horses, and remained interested in them the rest of his life. Pease attended Grand Central Art School and the National Academy of Design in New York City, and received a B.F.A. degree from the Yale University School of Art. He also studied art in Paris at the Ecoles des Beaux-Arts and Academie Julian. Pease painted portraits, still lifes, wildlife, polo scenes, a series of paintings of wild horses, scenes in Mexico and many more, in a range of media including oil, watercolor, and egg tempera. He illustrated magazines such as Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, Argosy, Adventure and the Saturday Evening Post, as well as periodicals in the Western genre. He also produced book covers of novels and science fiction books for Signet and Pocket-Books and illustrated Jeff Griffen's encyclopedic reference book The Hunting Dogs of America (1964). A longtime member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists, he exhibited his paintings in Southern New England, New York City, and in the West, where he eventually settled, living in Arizona in the latter years of his life.

Clearing the Snow, Saturday Evening Post Cover
By John Ford Clymer
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Cover of The Saturday Evening Post Magazine, February 6, 1960 Caption: "The Cover: Artist John Clymer takes you to the summit of Washington state's Snoqualimie Pass, where they seem to have had a few snow flurries lately. Up there the moist westerly winds bump against sky-reaching peaks of the Cascade Range, with the result that the winds spill their contents before whistling dryly on down across the eastern slopes. Thus residents of places like Seattle living in a relatively balmy clime beside the Pacific's mild Japan current, can drive in an hour or two up to where skiing material is sometimes twenty feet thick if it's an inch. Indeed, when seasons overlap, a downlander might conceivably pick a rose and go skiing with it in his buttonhole. All of which, thanks to highway crews who blow off the blizzards, is a very felicitous geographic arrangement." John Ford Clymer's success as an artist can be traced to his boyhood in the Kittitas Valley located in the central regions of Washington state. It was there that he developed an enthusiasm for the world around him and an abiding respect for historical accuracy. Over the years John Clymer received numerous awards and honors including the revered Prix de West in 1976, from the national Academy of Western Art. Other great achievements included both gold and silver metals for his oils and charcoal drawings from the Cowboy Artists of America, "Western Artist of the Year" from the National Wildlife Art Collectors Society, and both John and Doris were honored at the Ellensburg National Art Show and Auction for their contributions to western heritage. John's highest honor came in 1988 when he was awarded the prestigious Rungius Medal from the Wildlife of American West Art...

The Knave of Hearts: List of Characters
By Maxfield Parrish
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Medium: Oil on Board Signature: Signed Sight Size 20.13" x 16.38", Framed 26.00" x 23.00" Maxfield Parrish’s popularity as an illustrator began with his early work for magazine publishers. An Easter 1895 cover for Harper’s Bazaar, one of the leading publications of the day, was followed by a successful foray into book illustration beginning in 1897 when Parrish completed illustrations for Frank Baum’s Mother Goose in Prose. His unique style and vivid imagination were well suited to illustrating children’s literature and resulted in numerous commissions. The List of Characters is one of 26 paintings, which appeared as an illustration in Louise Saunders' book, The Knave of Hearts. Lawrence S. Cutler and Judy Goffman Cutler write, “The last book Parrish illustrated, The Knave of Hearts (1924), was his masterpiece. When Parrish discovered this children’s play, he proposed an illustrated edition to Scribner’s, to which the publisher enthusiastically agreed …It was written by Louise Saunders, who was the wife of Maxwell Evarts Perkins of Scribner’s, an important editor in the 20th century and discoverer of authors Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and others. The couple were summer residents at Cornish and close friends of the Parrishes” (Maxfield Parrish and the American Imagists, Edison, New Jersey, 2004, p. 172). According to Coy Ludwig, “The artist’s enthusiasm was shared by the publisher, who requested sketches or more precise information upon which to base a cost analysis, as final approval could not be given until the costs were estimated. Parrish prepared an elaborate dummy or mock-up of the proposed publication, complete with watercolor sketches of the illustrations, and sent it to the publisher early in 1921 …The twenty-six paintings for The Knave of Heartswere executed within three years, and the book, a sumptuous production, was published on October 2, 1925… The volume, selling for ten dollars, was packaged in a telescoping box...
