About the Item

This small and finely painted piece depicts the sidewheel steamer J.M.A. underway carrying passengers along the Hudson River. With flags snapping in the wind and whitecaps on the river, she makes a fine figure cutting through the water. The ship's single stack and engine are prominant above her pilot house and paddleboxes. The play of dark and light is particularly impressive giving great definition to each element of the ship. The sky fades from blue into hazy warm tones adding additional drama. We believe this ship is named for a person with these initials, but records searches of steamships have thus far given no further clues. There were many ships and companies which carried passengers and cargo along the Hudson during this period. Samuel Ward Stanton, like James Bard before him, was known as a master of painting these ships, particularly paddlewheel steamers. Stanton published a great book of his drawings of steamships in this period. Both artists made the ships the stars of their paintings creating a romantic view that is iconically American. Sadly, Stanton would die aboard the TITANIC, his career cut short. He left behind many drawings of steamships but far fewer paintings, and it's rare for his works in oil to come to market. Ship LUCY G. DOW
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
The strength of a great ship portrait lies with its overall striking composition blended with an attention to detail. Charles Sidney Raleigh was extremely skilled with both elements, and this is one of his finest works. An American full-rigged ship of large proportions, LUCY G. DOW is one of many ships owned by Maine interests, where the ship would be locally built and consortium owned. More Maine captains owned part of their ships than any other East Coast region, it appears through an informal survey of lists. Note the fine details of the captain and crew hard at work onboard off the coast. The numerous buildings are clustered on the peninsular stretch with a pier coming out near the lighthouse’s walkway. At the distance, ship masts...

Full Rigged Ship GATHERER
By Alexander Charles Stuart
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
A stalwart American ship clearing the Delaware headed for Honolulu with a load of coal, this broadside ship portrait by Alexander Charles Stuart is of the Ship GATHERER. In her maiden year of service, the Bath, Maine-built Downeaster went to New Orleans with hay, took a load of cotton from there to Liverpool, and crossed to collect the coal in Philadelphia before heading to Hawaii. She'd make 8 Cape Horn voyages, averaging about 129 days, a profitable and fast sailing Downeaster, and yet still record one of the bloodiest voyages in merchant maritime history. In this portrait, A.C. Stuart shows the large wooden vessel...

Portrait Of The Screw-Steamer Pennland In New York Harbor
Located in Jacksonville, FL
ntonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen’s Portrait of the Screw-Steamer Pennland in New York Harbor captures the grandeur of maritime travel in the late 19th century. The painting depicts the Pennland, a majestic steamship, cutting through the waters of New York Harbor with billowing smoke rising from its funnel. The vessel is painted with Jacobsen’s signature precision, showcasing the intricate details of its hull, rigging, and deck structures. The serene yet powerful presence of the ship is set against a dynamic harbor scene, where smaller vessels dot the waters and the soft hues of the sky reflect on the gentle waves. Jacobsen’s expert use of perspective and lighting lends a sense of depth and realism, making the viewer feel as though they are witnessing the ship’s arrival firsthand. As one of the most prolific maritime painters of his time, Jacobsen played a crucial role in documenting the golden age of steam travel. His works, including this detailed portrait of the Pennland, not only celebrate the engineering feats of the era but also serve as historical records of significant vessels. The transition from sail to steam was a defining moment in maritime history, and Jacobsen’s meticulous paintings capture this evolution with remarkable accuracy. His contributions to the maritime art movement remain invaluable, preserving the legacy of the great ships that once traversed the world’s oceans.
