Sandra Cohen
“the separation of isotopes”, Abstract, Pink, Red, Gold, Acrylic Painting, 2024

2024

About the Item

Sandra Cohen’s “the separation of isotopes” is a 12 x 12 x 1 inch abstract acrylic painting on cradled wood, in bright tones of pink, blue, orange, yellow, white and black. A simplified diagram of the process used for creating nuclear power and weaponry is embedded in an explosive field of color, shapes and disintegrating remnants of text. A sea-change, a depth-charge, fearsome and undeniable; an analogy for the powers of Time and Death, transformations that cannot be reversed. This painting is unframed with painted sides, and the signature is on the back. Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.
